CDC Statistical Analysis Fellowship

A research opportunity is currently available with the Applied Statistics Team (AST), Data Analytics Branch (DAB), Division of Injury Prevention (DIP), within the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (NCIPC), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. 
The Division of Injury Prevention (DIP) leads CDC's efforts to reduce unintentional and self-directed injuries. We work closely with state, local, tribal, academic, and other partners to advance planning, implementation, and evaluation of public health programs. We build scientific understanding of injuries’ burden, cost, etiology, and the effectiveness of interventions, and we use cutting-edge methods to translate data for use in program and policy planning across the Center and among our partners. The Data Analytics Branch (DAB) within DIP conducts methodologic research and data analysis, addresses existing data issues and new data challenges (big, complex, non-traditional data), and develops and disseminates data, tools, and applications.
Throughout the fellowship, the participant will have the opportunities to collaborate with a variety of scientific researchers on a variety of projects. The participant will be mentored by a statistician knowledgeable in advanced statistical methods. The participant will engage in statistical projects as needed. The participant will be involved with a project on multiple imputation focusing on missing data. The participant will be involved in conducting a literature review on the latest advances in multiple imputation and summarizing those findings, developing and evaluating statistical models for multiple imputation, and gain experience developing an abstract and manuscript for publication in a peer-review journal and/or materials for presentation at a professional meeting. In addition to the multiple imputation project, the participant may be involved and will receive training in any of the following activities related to injury and violence prevention:
  • Creating, updating, analyzing and managing large data sets with a complex sampling design
  • Contributing to the analysis of data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System-All Injury Program (NEISS-AIP) as well as other data sets
  • Learning about missing data issues commonly occurring in large data sets and state-of-art methodology for handling missing data (e.g. multiple imputation)
  • Preparing statistical and analytic reports and presentations
  • Developing and strengthening research and synthesis skills
  • Engaging in professional development activities designed to support a career in statistics
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: August 3, 2020 
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
Qualifications
The qualified candidate should have received a master's or doctoral degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree and will reach completion by the appointment start date. Degree must have been received within five years of the appointment start date.
