Registered Nurse - Bariatrics

POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Responsible for directing and coordinating all nursing care for departmental specific patients based on established clinical nursing practice standards. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes.  Supports the organization’s vision and mission. Utilizes knowledge of patient’s age and cultural diversity into the provision of patient care. Contributes to the provision of quality nursing care through performance improvement techniques that demonstrate positive outcomes in patient care. 

­POSITION EDUCATION/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing required
  • Current registered nurse’s license in the State of Texas
  • Current BLS certification.
  • ACLS certification within six (6) months of hire recommended
  • Willingness to be crossed trained to other areas.
  • Organizational skills is necessary
  • Good written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all levels of nursing, administration, and physicians
  • Prefer hospital, operating room, or previous Bariatric experience
  • Position requires travel, valid driver’s license and vehicle insurance are required

JOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:
Ability to practice nursing as described by the following definition: “The diagnosis and treatment of human responses to actual or potential health alternations.” Ability to utilize the best nursing process in the provision of nursing care including but not limited to administering treatments and medications, interpreting diagnostic tests, formulating a plan of care, collaborating with other health care providers and providing education to patients and/or significant others. The successful candidate will be required to pass competencies for this position.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practice
  • Ensures that care is delivered to each patient in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act of the State of Texas and ANA Standards of Clinical Nursing Practice.
  • Performs nursing care using sound judgment.
  • Implements physician’s orders in a safe and accurate manner.      
  • Maintains detailed and accurate records of nursing actions.
  • Participates in health/therapeutic counseling, teaching/emotional support for patients and significant others.
  • Maintains a safe and clean environment for patients and co-workers.
  • Administers medication and therapies within the scope of safe nursing practice.
  • Formulates, modifies and implements goal oriented patient care plans according to facility policies.
  • Monitors lab results, consultations from other providers to ensure medical and psychological clearances are met prior to being scheduled for surgery. Notifies surgeon and/or bariatrician of any finding outside of defined parameters.   
  • Assess criteria for bariatric surgery is met on all candidates presenting to center.
  • Ensure physician forms are completed accurately. 
  • Maintains oversight of the patient’s progress through the pre-operative process, from initial point of contact to surgery. Keeps patient abreast of all requirements needed.                       
  • Assist with obtaining authorizations from insurances for surgery.
  • Ensures all necessary documentation is included in medical record prior to surgery.
  • Complete insurance and any other forms needing medical information from patients to facilitate continuum of care as appropriate                                                                                      
  • Abides by the rules and regulations set forth by the Board of Nurse Examiners
  • Maintains current with all new policies and procedures published.
  • Assures patient is scheduled for educational classes at Bariatric Center as well as with other providers for surgical clearances as needed.  
  • Informs surgeon of schedule.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of any changes in surgeon’s schedule.
  • Answers and follows through on all calls as needed.
  • Informs primary care physicians their patients have begun process for bariatric surgery and notifies them of requirements they must complete. 
  • Updates primary care physicians of their patients progress after bariatric surgery via correspondence.
  • Assists with exchange of medical information between offices as needed and in accordance with HIPAA to facilitate patient care.
  • Conveys importance of follow up care to patients and encourages patients to attend their postoperative visits with Bariatric Center including support groups.
  • Provides direction to non licensed nursing staff in the delivery of patient care.
  • Anticipates potential problems situations and intervenes to offset any adverse impact.
  • Plans and coordinates time schedule with peers to provide coverage.
  • Builds a positive work environment by guiding employees to support the mission of the hospital, providing developmental opportunities and encouraging teamwork.
  • Perform inventory and order medical supplies. Ensures the distribution and delivery of equipment/supplies as necessary.
  • Ensures community communication/mail outs are distributed to increase awareness and grow market share.
  • Plans logistics of Community Outreach Events sponsored by Bariatric Center to include but not be limited to equipment, lab screenings, personnel, and seminars. Attend seminars and other educational classes offered by center as needed.
  • Works closely with contracted Bariatric physician and Director to facilitate Outreach Events.
  • Other duties as assigned.
