Behavioral Health Scientist

ANTICIPATED START DATE:  Two weeks after candidate identification
TRAVEL: As required to fulfill the responsibilities of the position
ASRT, Inc. provides scientific, information management, management consulting, bioinformatics, and administrative program support to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other Federal and private sector clients. The successful candidate will be a full-time employee of ASRT, Inc., and will be assigned to the Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch (WDPB), Division of Foodborne, Waterborne and Environmental Diseases (DFWED), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), at the CDC, located at 1600 Clifton Road, Atlanta, GA, to provide behavioral health support to the Center.
SCOPE OF WORK
The Behavioral Health Scientist will provide support for the development, deployment and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data collected from a national audience. This will include conducting qualitative and quantitative formative behavioral research and message testing in compliance with government regulations and providing topline summary reports of data collection activities.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct qualitative formative behavioral research and qualitative message testing utilizing protocols, data collection tools, and guidance from CDC. Qualitative data collection may include in-depth interviews, triad or dyad discussions, focus groups, and expert panels.
  • Function as a moderator who uses best practices for qualitative moderation such as using probes, encouraging participation, minimizing moderator bias, and managing group dynamics.
  • Identify strategies for stakeholders to participate, by listening in real time, to virtual data collection activities.
  • Actively engage in the recruitment and screening of participants in the qualitative data collection activities.
  • Conduct recruitment and screening based on previously developed protocols and guidance.
  • Conduct qualitative data collection among both English and non-English speaking participants.
  • Communication with stakeholders of recruitment and screening processes and timelines
  • Work to obtain informed consent from focus group interview participants based on protocols, as needed.
  • Facilitation of audio recording of all qualitative data collection activities using digital audio recording means.
  • Provide transcribed verbatim the audio recordings of the data collection activities and provide the transcript to CDC within 10 days of the data collection activity.
  • Ensure compliance with all OMB, IRB, and other Privacy Act and Guidelines while conducting the interviews.
  • Analysis of qualitative data in order to create summary reports of data collection.
  • Prepare and assist with preparation of documents and records of the work performed
  • Support planning and project management support of project initiatives
  • Facilitate communications between project stakeholders
  • Develop and validate integrated protocols from data collection to result reporting
  • Provide technical expertise and implementation of data collection methods to program stakeholders (internal and external)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
  • Ph.D. degree in sociology, psychology, natural science or related field to the responsibilities of the position, with 2-4 years of relevant experience, or
  • Master's degree in sociology, psychology, natural science or related field to the responsibilities of the position, with 4-7 years of experience.
Required: 
  • Experience developing protocols and instruments to collect both qualitative and quantitative data via survey, focus group or interview process
  • Experience in the data analysis of qualitative and quantitative data collected via survey, focus group or interview process
  • Experience in the processes of recruitment and consent gathering for qualitative and quantitative data collection
  • Experience working with statistical software such as REDCap, SAS, Stata, or similar software
  • Experience with quantitative data analysis software such as MAXQDA, NVivo, RQDA or similar software
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Excellent attention to detail and the ability to efficiently organize multiple priorities
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining project timeline
  • Ability to work and build coalitions with partners involved, and develop strategies for effectively conveying information to partners
  • Experience managing a qualitative and quantitative data collection team
Desirable:
  • Experience working with transcription services
  • Experience as a moderator of both in person and virtual data collection processes of quantitative and qualitative data
  • Experience developing mechanisms by which stakeholders can share data based on established policy
  • Skills and experience writing project reports, research protocols and manuscripts
  • Ability to work and build coalitions with partners involved, and develop strategies to effectively convey information to partners.
Language Skills:
  • The candidate must possess excellent oral and written communication skills in English
