About Fairbanks Soil & Water Conservation District :
The Fairbanks Soil and Water Conservation District (FSWCD) is combating poverty by promoting local food security measures in the USDA designated “food desert” of South Fairbanks. The FSWCD is currently developing a vertical urban farming project modeled after the Seeds of Change program in Anchorage, AK. This program provides young adults that are experiencing homelessness with employment and life skills training, while growing fresh produce for the community. The Fairbanks vertical urban farm program seeks to provide similar services through a partnership with the Fairbanks Youth Advocates, Fairbanks Food Bank, and a NASA funded urban gardening project.

The Project Development Specialist VISTA will help with the initiation phase of the project with activities that include: refining the scope of the project, establishing a project charter, developing a project funding plan, and assisting in community outreach for the project. Activities will include: 

• Create a list of recommended project deliverables, assumptions, and constraints to assist the Site Supervisor refine the project scope
• Develop a project scope statement based upon the Site Supervisor’s approved project deliverables, project assumptions and project constraints
• Produce a project statement of work that illustrates the community need for the project and the strategic vision of the partnership for the project
• Assist FSWCD staff conduct suggested fundraising activities for the project by coordinating the activities, creating/distributing promotional materials, designing advertisements for the activities,and attending fundraising events as needed
• Assist with grant writing to strengthen the project
• Promote outreach events through marketing material distribution, speaking engagements, radio/television/newspaper interviews and advertisements as appropriate

Program Benefits : 
  • Living allowance of $1,333 per month.
