About Fairbanks North Star Public Library :
The Noel Wien Library seeks to provide anti-poverty programming that alleviates poverty by providing quality educational, employment, social service opportunities to low-income community members of all ages. The library is a natural community hub for individuals struggling financially. This makes the library an ideal location for people to access the resources they need to escape poverty. The first year of this project identified that to best provide these resources, the library needs to connect its patrons with local social service organizations, provide increased literacy opportunities, and assist in job readiness programming. This second year of the project will explore building the capacity to implement such programs. The VISTA will develop, plan, and implement programming that maximizes the library’s ability to provide informational, educational, recreational, and research needs of the community. The FNSB seeks to break the cycle of poverty by providing increased educational and economic opportunities to all citizens. The library further seeks to provide low-income pre-K, teens, seniors, and job seekers with additional literacy programming and access to resources. The VISTA member will help to develop these programs.

The AmeriCorps member will help alleviate poverty by researching, planning and conducting outreach to enhance usability and access of the libraries by the underserved. Building on data gathered by the Year 1 VISTA, the VISTA serving in Year 2 will work with community to further build bridges to access. This position will also research and establish sources of funding for programming and work to strengthen and further partnerships thereby increasing the library’s ability to reach those in need. Plan and develop new programming related to literacy, job attainment, education enhancement, and early child development.
