Concussion & Head Injury Research

The U.S. Army Aeromedical Research Laboratory (USAARL) aims to provide medical research in the military operations environment to sustain the warfighter’s performance by delivering medical research and developing, testing, and evaluating solutions to air and ground warriors. USAARL conducts medical research to develop and provide the biomedical basis for countermeasures that prevent and mitigate warrior injury.
USAARL is seeking two candidates to assist with the ongoing injury biomechanics research at West Point, NY. The research appointment includes, but is not limited to, the following:
The participants will engage in an injury biomechanics research project(s) that is investigating neurosensory response to injury, head acceleration, and risk of concussion. The participants will learn and apply experimental methods, motion analysis algorithms, equipment operations, and various techniques involved in human exposure and response research. The participants will assist a collaborative, multi-disciplinary research team with human subjects/volunteer data collection in laboratory and field settings. The participants will analyze data, summarize study findings in paper and presentation formats, and present findings locally and at scientific meetings. The participants will gain a greater understanding of human kinematics, anatomical structures, and the overall research process.

Appointment Length
This opportunity is a twelve month research appointment with the option to be renewed for up to four additional one year terms.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USAARL. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
