Biophysics and Biomedical Modeling Research

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter performance science and its useful applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, performance and nutrition research. It features integrated cellular, tissue, & human research programs.
One ORISE opportunity is available with the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM). This opportunity includes, but not limited to the following:
The participant will gain research experience by participating in project coordination, execution, data analysis, and report generation on a variety of environmental research protocols. Initially, they will have the opportunity to assist in the data reduction and statistical analysis of an experiment assessing the efficacy of 14% oxygen breathing for accelerating jet lag recovery, participating in the analysis of cortisol and melatonin assays, jet lag questionnaires, sleep quality and quantity, and core body temperature data. In addition, the participant will assist the research team in protocol development for a field project evaluating an acute mountain sickness alert algorithm, and then assist in protocol execution, data analysis, and presentation of the study results. In addition, it is anticipated that the ORISE participant will have the opportunity to assist in the advancement of software decision aids and the advancement of personal status monitors for capturing real-time physiological state.
Appointment Length
This is a twelve month research appointment and can be renewed for additional research terms.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USARIEM. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
