Military Cognitive Performance Research

The U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine (USARIEM), a subordinate laboratory of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), is an internationally recognized center of excellence for Warfighter performance science and its useful applications. The Institute functions as a world-class laboratory for environmental medicine, physiology, performance and nutrition research. It features integrated cellular, tissue, & human research programs.
One ORISE opportunity is available with USARIEM. This opportunity includes, but not limited to the following:
The primary focus of this research fellowship will involve examining the effects of non-invasive transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on military job task performance, specifically marksmanship performance. The research participant may also have opportunities to gain diverse experience with human research studies investigating the effects of military occupational (e.g., physical/cognitive exertion) and environmental (e.g., heat, cold, altitude) exposures on physical, cognitive, and psychological performance. This research includes primarily laboratory-based studies, but may also include field-based studies.
Appointment Length
This is a twelve month research appointment and can be renewed for additional research terms
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by USRIEM. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

  • Training and Travel Allowance
Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
