This opportunity takes place in Vicenza, Italy.
The U.S. Army Garrison, Italy, Soldier for Life Transition Assistance Program (SFL-TAP) serves as the installation's representative (fellow) of the SFL-TAP, performing a variety of data research and data analysis projects, administrative, logistical, and related duties in direct support of the program.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant selected for this opportunity will provide support to the Soldier for Life Transitions Assistance Program by researching policies and procedures to ensure that the program is in compliance with Department of Defense (DoD) guidelines. As part of this research experience, the participant will:
  • Research and use data mining techniques that will focus on statistical modeling and knowledge discovery to aid in finding remedies to meet federal law and DoD guidelines. 
  • Gain experience and understanding of how federal, DoD, State and non-profit organizations interact and are reliant on each-other for successful outcomes.
  • Use modeling and discovery to aid in marketing. 
  • Learn how to develop and prepare briefing materials and talking points that directly enhance program delivery, and learn positive persuasive skills to encourage voluntary participation. 
  • Learn to create surveys that aid in the research, collect the data, and employ job and Army Credentialing Programs search techniques and STEM job fairs and apprenticeship programs that lead to meaningful career opportunities. 
  • Learn to conduct inventories of IT equipment in accordance with DA PAM 710-2-1 and AR 710-2. 
  • Collect and analyze customer service needs and trends as the NDAA 2019 is implemented, ensuring customer and program needs are met. 
  • Write and communicate in accordance with DoD directives.
  • Produce historical program analysis either with White Papers or slide presentations. 
  • Learn to collaborate with Armed Forces Network (AFN) and the Army Public Affairs Office to create written, radio and video content.
  • Coordinate (data collection, statistical modeling and knowledge discovery) with representatives of the U.S. Army, U.S. Department of Labor, Veterans Affairs, Small Business Administration, and other entities having statutory or other vested responsibilities or interests in the overall DoD Transition Assistance Program. 
  • Learn to use statistical modeling to create a transition database. 
  • Learn to produce a DoD approved database "how-to guide" for leadership training and historical purposes and share their findings and the creation of the database with other Transition Managers. 
  • Create and report their findings and recommend solutions to particular concerns or continued problem areas, such as poor soldier attendance at program activities.  
Appointment Length
This appointment is a twelve month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by APGDPW-ENV. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
