Government Relations Summer Intern

New York City Cyber Command (NYC3) was created in 2017 by Executive Order to lead the city’s cyber defense efforts, working across more than 100 agencies and offices to prevent, detect, respond, and recover from cyber threats. New York City Cyber Command (NYC3) is committed to protecting City infrastructure and critical systems from cyber threats, and helping residents become safer in their digital lives.

As the organization defending the largest municipality in the country, NYC3 is charged with directing citywide incident response, setting citywide cybersecurity policies and standards, and working with city agencies to strengthen their cyber defenses. 

Job Description
Working with the Director of Government Affairs, you will serve as part of a team responsible for advancing the cybersecurity posture of New York City through supporting our policy and intergovernmental affairs efforts.

This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic candidate interested in helping to shape cybersecurity programs and policies for the City of New York, engaging with NYC3 leadership, NYC intergovernmental affairs, and other key players on issues before the City Council, as well as partners at the state and federal levels. This position will also interact with other stakeholders on cybersecurity policy issues both within New York City, throughout the nation and beyond.

Activities of the Government Affairs Intern will support NYC3’s government affairs work, including, but not limited to:

  • Tracking legislative and regulatory issues; 
  • Draft reports,analysis, letters, testimony and other policy and programmatic documents, as needed;
  • Attend meetings with elected and appointed federal, state and local officials regarding intergovernmental cybersecurity concerns;
  • Maintaining a database containing contacts for key policy staff and coalition partners;
  • Maintaining vote/policy stance/target grids;
  • Support the response to questions from city leadership, intergovernmental entities and agency partners on policy and programmatic issues; 
  • Preparing briefing and presentation materials; and,
  • Monitoring statements from policymakers and experts.

Preferred Skills:

  • Pursuing a degree in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, Communications or an similar area of focus;
  • Experience working with or in government administration, policy advocacy, or a regulatory field;
  • A strong comprehension of, and passion for, information technology and/or cybersecurity;
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills;
  • Demonstrated active listening and teamwork skills;
  • Demonstrated experience working with others on challenging, complex initiatives and efforts;
  • Outstanding collaboration skills;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Excellent organization skills;
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills demonstrating support of executive decision making.

Minimum Qualification Requirements:
Selected candidates must be enrolled in a degree bearing program
 
SPECIAL NOTE
Due to the current COVID-19 crisis, this opportunity will be remote. Internship will be unpaid and interns must show proof of their university giving academic credit or funding from their university or authorized 3rd party. The length of this full time, 35 hour per week internship will be no longer than 12 weeks.
