Off Highway Vehicle Trail Crew Member

The Great Basin Institute is recruiting an Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) Trail Crewmember through the AmeriCorps Program to support recreation and visitor services for the USFS Bridgeport Ranger District by assisting recreation staff in management of the districts developed recreation sites, and motorized trails in conjunction with the District’s OHV program. Service activities include cleaning and maintaining developed recreation picnic areas and trailhead facilities, signing, and maintaining motorized trails. 
Service opportunities in support of the district’s OHV program include:
• Patrol OHV use areas to ensure areas are operated, used and maintained in accordance with the recreation plan and other appropriate planning documents.  
• Identifying and conduct maintenance and reconstruction of OHV routes.
• Operate and maintain, in safe working order, assigned vehicles, ATV, and trail equipment.
• Provides public information and interpretive services, including detailed information concerning recreational opportunities. Educate OHV users on potential resource damage caused by illegal use.  
The OHV Trail Crewmember will spend approximately 85% of the time in the field under varied environmental conditions, including high elevations, remote areas, rain/snow, extreme heat and cold. Remaining time will be spent principally on data management and reporting. This position requires working weekends and holidays.

The Bridgeport Ranger District is located on the west side of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, flanked on the west by the dramatic Sierra Nevada and falling away eastward to the Great Basin Desert. Vegetation ranges from high alpine plant communities to salt desert flats. The Bridgeport District encompasses 1.2 million acres and spans five mountain ranges. Much of the district is in Nevada, and some is in California. Recreation use is high because the District borders Yosemite National Park and several wilderness areas. Summer activities include hiking, camping, fishing, and OHV travel; winter activities include backcountry snowmobiling and skiing. The District has a robust program of work that covers range, fire and fuels, recreation, wildlife, fisheries, watershed, noxious weeds, minerals and special uses.
The Ranger Station is located in Bridgeport, CA, a town of about 600 year-round residents, nestled at the base of the Sierra Nevada. Bridgeport is about 45 minutes from Yosemite National Park, 1 1/2 hours from Lake Tahoe, and 2 1/2 hours from Reno, NV.
Compensation and Benefits:
• Living allowance: Approximately $1,050 biweekly, depending upon duration
• Education award: $2,321, upon successful completion of the full term of service
• Housing: Barracks provided by the US Forest Service may be available for this position
• Limited Health, Dental and Vision Insurance will be completely paid for at no cost to you by the Great Basin Institute.
Job Qualifications:
Coursework in recreation management, natural resources, or equivalent field experience;
Practical knowledge and ability to safely operate and maintain OHV equipment, including ATV and/or four-wheeled off highway vehicles; 
• Possess knowledge of techniques, materials, and equipment used in the care, maintenance, and reconstruction of OHV trails and facilities;
• Ability to safely and effectively perform field and associated work; 
• Ability to self-motivate and sustain independent productivity;
Ability to perform moderate to strenuous physical exertion including walking in steep or uneven terrain, bending, lifting, and carrying;
 Ability to live and work in rural and remote field setting; 
 Willingness and ability to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the mission of GBI and the goals and objectives of the USFS; 
• Possess clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with knowledge of or ability to learn how to safely operate a 4WD pickup truck on- and off-road; and
• Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements: (1) U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, (2) eligible to receive an AmeriCorps Education Award (limit of two in a lifetime, regardless of award amount), and (3) pass National Sex Offender Public Registry (NSOPR) and federal criminal background checks.
