PCMS Archaeological Technician

Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site is a 236,000-acre training site associated with U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) Fort Carson. It is located approximately 150 miles southeast of Colorado Springs in Las Animas County near Model, Colorado. The closest city is Trinidad, which is approximately 35 miles from PCMS. The USAG Fort Carson manages approximately 373,000 acres in southeastern Colorado. Approximately 93% of PCMS has been surveyed, resulting in the documentation of over 6,000 cultural resources. The Fort Carson Cultural Resources Management Program is responsible for the management of these resources, and ensures compliance with cultural resource-related laws and regulations, such as the National Historic Preservation Act, Archaeological Resources Protection Act, Native American Graves and Repatriation Act, American Indian Religious Freedom Act, Antiquities Act of 1906, etc. For more information about USAG Fort Carson, visit: https://carson.army.mil
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will assist with the management of cultural resources in compliance with the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). Participant will draw upon current and learned skills and participate closely with the PCMS Archaeologists to perform the following: record and evaluate archaeological resources, analyze artifacts, and report findings; inspect and monitor protected resources; records management tasks; and assist with public outreach initiatives. Participant will be part of a dynamic, highly motivated team, often operating under tight time lines to help accomplish critical Army requirements. 
Appointment Length
This ORISE appointment is for a six-month period. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by US Army-ECBC. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
