FDA Postgraduate Research Opportunity in Animal Food Analysis

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.

An opportunity is available at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), Division of Veterinary Product Safety (DVPS) located in Rockville, Maryland.

The participant will receive training on various aspects of animal food sampling and analysis. The participant will also receive training on the criticality of selecting the appropriate analytical method when testing for nutritional guarantees or animal food hazards (biological, chemical, physical contaminants).

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will be trained in the following areas:
  • Learn about different sampling and analytical methods used with animal food
  • Learn when analytical testing is used. For example:   Identification of contaminants in raw material, or contamination after a product is produced and before it is placed on the market.
  • Support the development of new products, including, for example, the choice of ingredients or components, the design of animal food processing, shelf-life studies and evaluation of the marketed product.
  •   Compliance with regulations for both the import and export of animal food products to different countries. Food regulation is designed to protect public health and the safety of consumers.
  • Learn FDA’s policy on plain language and how to make a document 508 compliant

As a result of this training, the participant will contribute to the development of a database of current animal food test methods. In doing so, the participant will gain the education and knowledge of how to collect and summarize technical information, in order to design internal FDA reports, training materials, and/or fact sheets on animal food sampling and analysis methods. Further, the participant will be part of a Team that conducts research with animal feed contaminants/hazards and who apply their scientific knowledge in deciding whether certain feed hazards require 1) more research to more completely understand their risk to animal and human health, 2) enhanced surveillance to identify points where controls can be exercised to reduce exposure to threats to animal and human health, and 3) increased outreach to the animal feed manufacturers and animal producers to ensure they comprehend their roles in ensuring their feed and food products are safe.
