Correctional Officer

The South Dakota Department of Corrections will be offering a $1,500 retention bonus for successful candidates who maintain two years of continuous employment. Details will be discussed during interviews.

Correctional Officers maintain custody of male inmates in the State Penitentiary by enforcing institution operations memoranda and procedures to ensure the safety and security of the inmates and employees and maintain confinement conditions. 

Officers are assigned a specific post in an area such as a control room, cell hall, visit room, guard tower, recreation facility, or patrol vehicle. Common duties in most posts include observing inmates in cell halls, recreation areas, dining halls, schools, health services, and shower rooms; directing the work of inmates by assigning duties and monitoring work; preparing reports on incidents and rule infractions; conducting inmate counts and maintaining log books; escorting and transporting inmates to and from inside and outside appointments; inspecting and searching cells, common areas, inmates, and visitors; monitoring and controlling gates and cell doors; conducting random drug and alcohol tests, and responding to crisis situations.

Service as a Correctional Officer at the South Dakota State Penitentiary is an excellent way to begin a law enforcement career and to gain supervisory experience. We train new officers in everything they will need to know; no prior education or experience is necessary. Officers are eligible for Class B retirement with 8% matching contributions. Uniforms are provided.

Correctional Officers at the South Dakota State Penitentiary must be able to work various shifts including mornings, evenings, overnights, weekends, and holidays.

Applicants will be required to take an employment test in order to pass on to the next round of the hiring process.

Knowledge of:
  • English grammar, spelling and punctuation.

  • observe and hear inmates;
  • endure prolonged periods of time standing, walking, and climbing stairs;
  • operate two-way radios, firearms, and restraining devices;
  • exercise tact and discretion in dealing with others;
  • communicate information clearly and concisely.
