This position works in the State Public Health Laboratory and supports testing efforts in the South Dakota Public Health Laboratory Forensic and Environmental Sections. This position may work with biological specimens (i.e. urine and blood), acids, bases, and corrosives. A working knowledge of universal precautions, biological, chemical, and occupational safety is also required since the position may require the use of personal protective equipment including gloves, gown, face shield, respirator, and other equipment. It requires standing for several hours a day. The incumbent must be capable of travel within the State of South Dakota. This position serves as support for the forensic chemist which will involve working with controlled substance in solid dose drug analysis. Also, may work in the Environmental Section metal and pesticide testing.

The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
A minimum of a bachelor's degree in chemistry or toxicology is preferred.
Knowledge of:
  • gas chromatograhpy and chromatography/mass spectometry;
  • liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry;
  • various extraction procedures.
Skill to:
  • operate chemistry instrumentation, be a critical thinker and detailed oriented.
Ability to:
  • communicate effectively, be organized and multitask.
