USDA-ARS Physical Science Intern

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.
A research opportunity is available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), San Joaquin Valley Agricultural Sciences Center located in Parlier, California.
The proposed project will be centered around postharvest fumigation research. The selected participant will be involved in elucidating toxicological data involving pests, commodities and contemporary commercial fumigants in an effort to ultimately develop fumigation schedules that can be implemented to preserve ecological integrity. In addition, the project will explore methods of fumigant recapture as a means of remediation for gas that might otherwise be vented to the environment.
The day-to-day activities associated with this project will include: preparation of samples and calibration standards, maintenance and calibration of analytical instruments as well as, recording, analyzing and reporting data.
Upon completion of the project, the selected participant will have gained a deeper understanding of a fumigant's chemical toxicological properties as related to postharvest fumigation. In addition, the participant will learn to use the understanding of a fumigant's chemical properties to develop efficient and ultimately economically viable waste mitigation methods.
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS.
