Development Associate-Fundraising

The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) is one of the nation’s leading policy institutes focusing on federal and state issues that affect low-income families and individuals. It has a national reputation for conducting rigorous research and analysis, developing policy ideas and strategies, shaping a broad array of federal and state policy debates, and influencing policy outcomes. The Center’s expertise spans a range of areas including federal and state budget and tax policy, health care, social insurance, nutrition, housing, income support, and other policies that improve the well-being of low- and moderate-income people and advance racial equity. The Center’s funding comes from private foundations and individuals.

The Center has an opening for a full-time Development Associate to join its Development Department, based in the Center’s Washington, D.C. office.

The Development Associate provides vital support principally to the Development Department’s individual giving program. This is a pivotal position in a fast-paced department in which the Associate collaborates with and receives assignments from the Director of Individual Giving as well as the Vice President for Development. The Development Associate may be asked to assist with database-related foundation grants management as needed and may be tasked with some foundation writing assignments.



Responsibilities


The Associate provides overall support to the Development Department’s individual giving program. This includes prospect research and updating donor wealth and philanthropy profiles; recording and acknowledging individual gifts, including gifts given by check, credit card, wire, stock, and a range of donation portals; and managing individual donor data in the development database (Salesforce for Nonprofits). The Associate will be expected to develop a working familiarity with CBPP donors, their gift amounts, and their relationships with staff, CBPP Board members, other CBPP individual donors, and the larger philanthropic community.

Responsibilities also include generating gift and donor reports from Salesforce and providing analyses of CBPP donor giving trends and responses to donor communications, such as emails and event invitations. The Associate is the department lead on Salesforce for individual donor records and collaborates with members of the IT team to lead system improvements. On the foundation grants side, the Associate, with assistance from an intern, conducts and updates research profiles on current and prospective foundation funders.

The Associate is also responsible for:

  • Executing fundraising appeal and stewardship campaigns and managing logistics for events and donor meetings;
  • Assist with preparation of materials for board meetings, donor visits, and other donor outreach and stewardship activities;
  • Coordinate with a consulting law firm and finance and other CBPP departments as needed in preparing and updating state charitable registrations;
  • Collaborating with finance and other departments to help ensure the accuracy of information such as sources of wired funds and identities of donors giving through donor-advised funds;
  • Generating complete and accurate annual donor lists in gift amount categories for our Honor Roll of Support, which is printed and posted on our website;
  • Conducting research on current and prospective foundation funders, their funding priorities, and grant recipients and their boards of directors, and preparing written profiles; and
  • As needed, the Associate will assist with writing, editing, and reviewing donor communications, such as acknowledgements, activity reports, program updates, and stewardship emails; and proofread foundation grant reports, proposals, and other documents generated by Development Writers to ensure correct grammar, punctuation, and contextual accuracy. The Associate may also be tasked with foundation writing assignments.



Qualifications


  • Commitment to the Center’s mission to improve the well-being of low- and moderate-income people and advance racial equity as part of the Center’s work.
  • 2-3 years gift and grants management experience with some level of responsibility for independent decision-making, preferably in a nonprofit development office.
  • Familiarity and facility with a donor contact resource management database, including accuracy in data recordkeeping and relationship linking. Salesforce experience and interest in furthering the Center’s design and use of Salesforce is strongly preferred.
  • Experience and comfort with donor/prospect research tools and foundation research.
  • Solid writing skills with the ability to put the Center’s mission and work in compelling and clear language.
  • Comfort working with a team of colleagues and across departments.
  • Facility juggling multiple tasks with accuracy and flexibility to meet shifting priorities and deadlines.
  • Ability to set priorities and communicate challenges to supervisors.
  • Understanding of the role that racial inequity plays in our society and experience working with communities that are underrepresented in federal and state policy debates.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and ethical practices.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university.

This position reports to the Director of Individual Giving
Terms of Employment: Full-time, exempt.
Bargaining Unit Status: This is a bargaining unit position.
