Visuals Team Illustration Intern (Remote) - Fall 2020

NPR’s Fall 2020 Internship Program will be fully remote. 
Program Duration: September 8 - December 11, 2020
NPR Visuals team is looking for an editorial illustrator to join our team of art directors, photos editors, designers, developers, data journalists, videographers and more. 
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Strong visuals are vital to NPR’s many platforms. The illustration intern will collaborate with art directors and editors to tell visual stories. This includes illustrating sometimes-abstract concepts for stories across the newsroom and podcasts.
  • You will be expected to conduct visual research
  • Produce conceptual sketches
  • Incorporate feedback and work under deadlines
  • You may also be asked to assist with other projects for NPR’s social media platforms.
WHO CAN APPLY?
  • LOCATION: Must be planning to work during the term of the Fall 2020 internship in the United States and authorized to work in the United States. 
  • EDUCATION: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship. 
  • TECHNOLOGY: Must have access to reliable internet.
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Intern candidates should have an interest in journalism and a portfolio with editorial illustration work. 
  • You should also have an understanding of the social responsibility of image-making, with an eye for diversity and representation. 
  • You should be aware of journalistic ethics and copyright laws.  
  • The NPR Visuals team is a collaborative unit, and our interns are expected to weigh in on the team’s work and contribute their own ideas. 
  • You should be a team player, an organized self-starter who is used to juggling multiple projects, and excited to experiment. 
  • Even though this is a visual position, you also need strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Finally, you should be passionate about the power of illustration as a medium for telling stories.  
You will be part of NPR’s intern program, which includes many interns each semester, across different departments. There will be coordinated training and intern-focused programming throughout the semester, which includes meeting NPR hosts, career development and other opportunities. As an intern, you will be treated as a member of the team. Many NPR employees are former interns and they’re always willing to help current interns.
