The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) currently has two openings for Environmental Health Sanitarians - Entry or Senior (Retail/Recreation Emphasis) in the Division of Food and Recreational Safety! The headquarter locations of these positions will be a home office located in one of the following counties:
-Position 1: Marinette, Oconto, or Florence County
-Position 2: Monroe or Pepin County

Position Summary:  
The Environmental Health Sanitarian position is responsible for enforcement of food and health safety laws, administrative codes, regulations and standards governing all recreational licensing programs under the authority of Wisconsin Statutes. This position includes: on-site evaluation, inspection and documentation of sanitary conditions and durability of facilities, equipment and/or product; application of codes and statutes; providing technical consultation and educational services to internal and external stakeholders. Based upon evaluation and/or inspection findings and preparation of reports, subsequent enforcement action may be warranted including issuing closure orders when an imminent health threat is found. Recreational businesses, municipal, and/or private systems impacted by inspection include: permanent, mobile and temporary restaurants; bed and breakfast establishments; lodging facilities; recreational-educational camps; campgrounds; vending operations; public swimming facilities; and other establishments subject to Wisconsin licensure.

Special Notes:   

This position involves routine and extended travel throughout the State, including the need for flexibility with schedule changes. There will also be occasional overnight travel required.

Either possession of or the ability to obtain a valid driver's license, or the ability to provide one's own transportation including automobile insurance, for work purposes is required.

A criminal background check will be conducted prior to an offer of employment.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DATCP sponsorship) at the time of application.

Sanitarian work requires lifting up to 50 pounds; thorough use of sight and hearing to observe physical surroundings; ability to climb and work at elevated heights such as on catwalks; as well as sitting, standing, walking and bending for extended periods of time. Candidate must also have the ability to complete outdoor job activities the entire 12 months of the year which may include inclement weather and extreme temperatures.
Qualifications:   
A minimally qualified candidate at the entry level must be eligible to take the Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian exam, the NEHA REHS/RS exam or hold the RS in Training title (for eligibility requirements, please see the hyperlinks below).
A minimally qualified candidate at the senior level will possess the Wisconsin Registered Sanitarian credential or the NEHA REHS/RS credential. The candidate must also have at least 3 years of experience in the Environmental Health Field.
A well qualified candidate at the entry and senior levels will also have one or more of the following:
Training and/or experience with regulatory inspection and/or quality assurance.
Training and/or experience with retail/recreational safety risks, assessments and/or production methods.
Experience applying and/or interpreting federal and/or state laws, rules, regulations, standards and/or policies.
Experience performing inspections, evaluations, sampling and/or utilizing investigational techniques in a retail/recreation production environment. Salary Info: Entry level $53,040-$55,120 annually; Senior level $57,200-$59,280 annually.
