Preferred Requirements:
Licensure in special education preferred, or individuals enrolled in an educational program to obtain a degree in special education, or individuals who based on their community expertise demonstrate the skills and knowledge to provide special education instruction.
Description:
The position provides direct specialized instruction to students who have educational needs across categorical disabilities. The individual hired for this position can expect to work closely with a department of special education teachers in delivering services to students who have needs that are both academic in nature, as well in their adaptive functioning. The specialized instruction occurs in core curricular areas, which includes the possibility of providing alternative curriculum in the areas of science and social studies in partnership with a special education colleague. The position requires a working knowledge of special education due process requirements and best practices in developing Individual Education Plans based on evaluation data and progress monitoring.
The candidate will demonstrate strong communication skills due to the need for team collaboration and planning. In addition, the individual will need to possess the skills for curriculum development and backward instructional design to ensure the needs outlined on students’ IEP are addressed. Innovative thinking and the willingness to develop programming through a teaming process is a must. Ability to write reports, lesson plans, learning objectives, tests, and assists in writing and reviewing curriculum using and applying professional/technical concepts, principles and terminology.
In addition, relationship skills that demonstrate the ability to deal effectively and appropriately with parents, students, staff and other educational professionals over instructional needs, concerns or problems of the student and district is a necessity.
