Land Surveyors are responsible for legal land surveys for the Department of Transportation (DOT). This position will determine boundaries of department properties and rights-of-way, prepare plats and corner records, corners of adjacent properties and alignments for upcoming construction projects. This person will assist and may help with training area technician surveyors in various activities.
The incumbent will often work alone in remote areas, dealing with various animals, reptiles and insects; may face extreme weather conditions, typically in the summer; and may walk long distances carrying equipment.
Some overnight travel is possible.
Licenses and Certifications: 
Must be licensed as a Land Surveyor by the South Dakota Board of Technical Professions.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have: 
Applicants with a friendly disposition, as there will be daily contact with landowners, engineers, other surveyors, and local government officials are preferred; and need to be self-motivated, organized, and be able to prioritize work.
Knowledge of:
  • the laws governing the practice of land surveying and the laws governing the ownership of real property;
  • the principles, theories, and practices of highway or road engineering;
  • mathematics, especially the application of geometry and trigonometry, and physics;
  • effective practices, methods, techniques, and equipment of land surveying;
  • personnel and fiscal management.
Skill to:
  • to use a computer and operate Microsoft software;
  • to use CAD software (Bentley products);
  • to use surveying software and hardware (Trimble products) used by the Department;
  • to think independently and solve problems, individually or as a team.
Ability to:
  • understand the foundational elements of mathematics that would lead to choosing one method over another for a particular task;
  • make judgements and decisions based upon a preponderance of evidence;
  • interpret statutes, and documents and defend decisions made;
  • interpret legal descriptions of land into tangible positions on the ground;
  • prepare plats and corner records;
  • plan, organize, coordinate, prioritize, assign, and evaluate the work of others;
  • maintain a variety of technical records and adapt records systems to computerization;
  • make accurate, meticulous, and precise survey computations;
  • establish and maintain effective working relationships with other land surveyors, local government officials, engineers, and the public;
  • communicate effectively;
  • see details at close range, i.e., within a few feet of the observer; and to see details at a distance.
