Infection Control Specialist

The Infection Control Specialist serves as the organization's Infection Control Officer.

Qualifications: The Infection Control Specialist may be a Medical Technologist (BS), a Nurse (BSN) with a minimum of attendance at an approved epidemiology program (CDC or APIC), or an individual who is qualified through education, training, experience or certification. Certification in Infection Control through the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC) is to be achieved as soon as the required criteria have been met. Continuing education is ongoing and maintained through involvement with the associated professional organization on both National APIC (American Professionals for Infection Control) and State of Maine APIC. Memberships through computer list serves include APIC, CDC, NIOSH, OSHA, The Joint Commission, and Pub Med. Attendance at the APIC National, SHEA (Society of Hospital Epidemiology Association) conferences and/or other media review are available on a regular basis.

The Infection Control Specialist is trained in hospital epidemiology principles and is responsible for the surveillance, analysis, and reporting of health care acquired infections, education of employees about infection control; and assisting with the development of health system policies and procedures to ensure rigorous infection control standards that meet The Joint Commission, CMS federal guidelines, OSHA, State Public Health and Centers for Disease Control (CDC) requirements and Quality agencies.

Responsibilities: The incumbent performs duties and tasks in accordance with performance standards established for the job. The incumbent is responsible for participation in and completion of all patient safety initiatives appropriate to the position. The incumbent may have access to highly confidential patient, employee and/or Mercy proprietary information, and must handle & protect the information in accordance with hospital & system policies, HIPAA requirements and the highest level of ethical standards. In addition, the incumbent conducts all job responsibilities according to the Mission and Values of Mercy Hospital.
