Surgical Technologist

Fairview Health Services is looking for a Surgical Technologist for our busy Operating Room at University of Minnesota Medical Center West Bank Campus and Masonic Children's Hospital, located in Minneapolis, MN. This is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Minnesota and in turn has students, residents, fellows placed in this OR on a daily basis.  The West Bank has 15 operating rooms, 1 EP Lab, 1 Cath Lab serving an average of 36 cases per day, 24/7. We provide state of the art surgical suites for adult and pediatric patients and are currently renovating additional OR's to complement the existing 4 larger OR's, as well as creating new locker room and OR storage space. 
 
 
This Surg tech position is 64 hours in a 2 week pay period, 8 hour d/e/n. One weekend per month.
 
Surgical services are provided to patients in the following clinical specialties which get divided up into 5 teams;
  • High Volume Ortho/Spine/Oral (mainly adults)
  • Peds CV-Hearts/Cardio Thorasic
  • Peds Neuro/Generals/Urology/Bariatrics
  • Peds Transplant
  • Adult Urology
  • Benign GYN
  • ENT/Eye/Plastics
  • Peds Dental 
  • Robotic DaVinci

Responsibilities/Job Description

The Surgical Technologist performs the functions of a surgical technologist as a scrub person during surgical procedures providing patient care services appropriate to the age of the patients (ages pediatric through geriatric) served during the shift of duty in collaboration with the RN. Is responsible for adhering to standards of nursing practice and patient care, correct use of supplies/equipment and maintenance of the surgical suite under the direction of a RN.
 
Serves as scrub person during operative procedures
  • Anticipates surgeon’s needs
  • Supplies appropriate instruments, suture and specialty items.
  • Maintains aseptic technique during all sterile procedures.
  • Assures proper identification and handling of specimens.
  • Completes all required sponge, sharps and instrument counts.
  • Follows appropriate action in emergency situations.
Provides patient care
  • Adheres to standards of clinical practice and patient care appropriate to the age of the patients.
  • Assists in transfer/positioning of patients.
  • Collaborates with the MD and circulating nurse to provide care for each patient.
  • Respects the confidentiality of all information
Corrects use and setup of supplies and equipment
  • Assures availability and proper functioning of supplies and equipment.
  • Assembles and adjust equipment.
  • Cleans, replenishes and sterilizes instruments and supplies as needed.
  • Participates in the evaluation of new equipment or supplies.
  • Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room in readiness of next patient.
Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served.
 
Required Qualifications
  • Military, LPN surgical assistant or surgical technologist training completion
  • BLS certification for healthcare providers
Preferred Qualifications
  • Graduate from an accredited Surgical Technologist program
  • AST certification or certification eligible at time of hire
  • Stronly prefer 1 to 3 years Main OR surgical technologist experience
 Other Required Skills
  • Knowledge of physical, psychosocial and cognitive developmental needs of population served
  • Knowledge of age appropriate outcomes and interventions.
Desired Skills
  • Demonstrate the ability to work under stress in a variety of situations
  • Ability to work well under a team environment
