USDA-ARS Antimicrobial Resistance and Alternatives to Antimicrobials Fellowship

ARS Office/Lab and LocationA research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) at the George Washington Carver Center (GWCC) located in Beltsville, Maryland.

Research ProjectUSDA's antimicrobial resistance (AMR) mission is to provide safe and healthy food to everyone by adopting science-based and risk-informed policies with respect to AMR. As the intramural research arm of the USDA, ARS performs solution-oriented AMR research to provide tools and knowledge for the benefit of agriculture and public health.

Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will collaborate with National Program Leaders (NPL) to develop and report on ARS research programs as they relate to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In conjunction with NPLs, the participant will help plan scientific workshops; interface and communicate with interagency, national, and international groups such as National Antimicrobial Resistance System (NARMS), Combatting antimicrobial resistance (CARB) Task Force, and Transatlantic Task Force on Antimicrobial Resistance (TATFAR); and assist in the development and accomplishment of reports and communication materials for lay audiences. Due to COVID-19, the mentor for this opportunity will work with ORISE and the selected candidate to accommodate current ARS facility access policies.

Learning ObjectivesOpportunities for training and travel to national and international AMR conferences and collaborative meetings are COVID-19 dependent. Through participation in the fellowship, the fellow will have the opportunity to interact with ARS scientists and program managers across the agency and gain an understanding of the federal response to AMR. The fellow will develop advanced scientific, verbal, written, and graphical communication skills.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: November 1, 2020.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment(s) will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant(s) will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR). Non-U.S. citizen applicants should refer to the Guidelines for Non-U.S. Citizens Details page of the program website for information about the valid immigration statuses that are acceptable for program participation.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
