SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS
 
JOB TITLE: Intern- Engineering
PAY RANGE: $19.00- $22.00
 
By applying to this requisition, you will be considered for multiple engineering internships in which you are qualified. Most internships are for Summer 2021, with some opportunities for part-time work throughout the school year.
 
Flexible hours between Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
 
LOCATION: Internship locations will vary between the Kansas City, Missouri, Northeast Kansas, Burlington, KS and the Wichita, KS area. Evergy offers a housing stipend to eligible interns to assist in covering costs of short-term summer housing.

Below is a summary list of opportunities we may have available for engineering students:
 
POWER PLANT ENGINEERING
Assist Generation managers with project related tasks:
• Perform technical calculations and engineering analysis
• Research technical information and develop procedures for the proper operation and maintenance of power plant equipment.
• Update drawings and engineering information in support of power plant configuration changes
• Utilize various computer programs to complete technical work within Generation
• Develop and give a presentation to Generation Management at the end of the internship
• Perform other related activities as assigned
• Provide field supervision of contractors
• Manage projects of varying complexity
• Additional project detail will be available during the interview process
 
METALLURGICAL LAB
Interns learn and perform metallurgical examinations and analysis, including sectioning, grinding, polishing, and etching, as well as photomicrograph samples of failures at the Metallurgical Lab, as directed by the staff metallurgical engineer. Potential field assignments for the interns may include attending forced and planned outages to work directly with boiler/central engineers to inspect boilers, piping, etc. Interns develop skills to plan, organize and perform inspections, as well as provide recommendations for improvements and follow-up of repairs and overhauls. We seek highly motivated candidates with excellent communication skills.    
 
SHORT-TERM PLANNING
The selected candidate will work under the supervision of the Short-Term Transmission Planning Manager on a variety of technical and nontechnical assignments related to Westar Energy’s electric transmission system. This position will provide a good opportunity for an engineering student to become familiar with Evergy’s design and engineering practices, technical analysis, and field operations related to the transmission system with a focus on operational planning and outage coordination.
·        Modeling power flow data using PSS/E and EMS State Estimator software
·        Performing transmission planning and outage coordination studies
·        Analyzing real-time operating conditions
·        Calculating transmission line and transformer impedance and ratings
·        Communicating and collaborating with project stakeholders
·        Performing field visits to understand system design and functionality
·        Assisting with Process Improvements
 
 
TRANSMISSION OPERATIONS
The selected candidate will work under the supervision of the Transmission Operations Manager on a variety of technical and nontechnical assignments related to Westar Energy’s high voltage electric transmission system. This position will provide a good opportunity for an engineering student to become familiar with the industry’s design and engineering practices, technical analysis, and field operations related to the transmission system with a focus on real-time operations.
·        Developing Situational Awareness displays
·        Performing planned and forced outage coordination studies
·        Analyzing real-time operating conditions
·        Developing job aids for system operators
·        Communicating and collaborating with project stakeholders
·        Performing field visits to understand system design and functionality
·        Updating Spreadsheets
·        Assisting with Process Improvements
 
OPERATIONS TECHNOLOGY
Under supervision of Operations Technology leadership, individual will work on a variety of assignments related to the development and deployment of new technologies into the Evergy distribution system. 
·        Developing new technologies that will result in efficiency improvements in the operations, maintenance and reliability of the company distribution systems.
·        Development and deployment of new communicating technologies select system automation initiatives, and the development of cross-platform integration with various company databases and systems.
·        Work closely with the Asset Planning, Operations Analytics, IT, and Standards group to incorporate changes to the design standards for the new technologies which will allow for new technology deployments as a normal course of work. 
·        Work closely with the Field Engineering, Design / Scheduling, Distribution Maintenance and Training groups to ensure that persons who interact with the new equipment are cognizant of all aspects of the safe operation and maintenance of the new equipment. 
·        Support the development of new data analytics and reporting strategies. 
·        Providing expert insight into possible methods for leveraging data to be used in the directed maintenance program which will ultimately allow for a reduction in unplanned maintenance activities, increased system reliability and more timely system restorations.
·        Developing specialized spreadsheets, databases and reports to aid in stream-lining group processes.
·        Support various DA initiatives including monitoring key performance indicators and development of reporting tools & reports.
·        Utilizing various software tools to create specialized reports from data contained in company databases.
 
RELIABILITY ENGINEERING
Under the supervision of the Reliability Engineering Manager, works on a variety of assignments to provide reliability support to Evergy’s fleet of power plants. Will assist generation Predictive Maintenance Analysts and Reliability Engineers with a wide range of technologies to help achieve improved reliability.
·        Analyzing data from predictive maintenance routes and work management systems
·        Assisting with process improvements
·        Assisting Reliability Engineers with conducting Root Cause Analysis and Reliability Center Maintenance
·        Providing Cost Avoidance analysis on Predictive Maintenance and Advanced Pattern Recognition findings
 
DISTRIBUTION ASSET MANAGEMT
Reports to the Manager Distribution Asset Management, this position is part of a team responsible for managing asset programs to maintain the distribution power delivery system. This team will utilize data from various data stores and turn the data into actionable information to be used in establishing a directed approach to risk-based maintenance practices. In this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to work with staff engineers to provide guidance and direction to operations groups to ensure construction and maintenance spending is focused on highest value items. This position will support developing projects & activities that will lead to improvements in operation effectiveness and customer reliability.
 
SYSTEM PROTECTION
Reports to the Manager Distribution Asset Management, this position is part of a team responsible for managing asset programs to maintain the distribution power delivery system. This team will utilize data from various data stores and turn the data into actionable information to be used in establishing a directed approach to risk-based maintenance practices. In this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to work with staff engineers to provide guidance and direction to operations groups to ensure construction and maintenance spending is focused on highest value items. This position will support developing projects & activities that will lead to improvements in operation effectiveness and customer reliability.
 
DISTRIBUTION STANDARDS AND SUPPORT
The Distribution Standards and Support group is responsible for all aspects of standardizing distribution line equipment and construction standards development. Interns may help create, document, and/or maintain standardized designs and assist with material specification, review, and selection. This position will require interfacing with manufacturer representatives as well as many other workgroups including field operations, design, supply chain planning, and purchasing.
·        Analyzing components of standard distribution designs
·        Researching/Reviewing distribution system products
·        Establishing new item records in appropriate systems
 
ENGINEERING OPERATIONAL ANALYTICS
Reports to the Senior Manager Operations Analytics, this position is part of a team responsible for analytics from descriptive to predictive and prescriptive for the operations portion of Evergy with a focus on transmission, substation and distribution power delivery system operations. This team utilizes data from various data stores and turn the data into actionable information. In this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to work with staff engineers to provide guidance and direction to operations groups to ensure construction and maintenance spending is focused on highest value items. This position will support developing projects & activities that will lead to improvements in operation effectiveness and customer reliability.
 
WOLF CREEK ENGINEERING (BURLINGTON, KS)
These positions provide students a realistic engineering experience supporting the safe and efficient operation of a nuclear power plant. Student Engineers are matched with an experienced technical mentor and assigned meaningful real-world engineering projects. There are opportunities for Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Nuclear and Chemical Engineering Students.in a variety of Engineering Teams. Typical work hours are 4 – 10hour days with a 3-day weekends (Friday – Sunday). This is an engineering student position requiring completion of Sophomore Year (60 Hours) prior to start of employment.
·        Design Engineering Team – Responsible for developing and reviewing projects directly related to plant design such as modification packages, calculations, engineering specifications, design analyses and vender supplied documents.
·        Support Engineering Team – Responsible for implementing and maintaining programs such as ASME code required testing code, Flow Accelerated Corrosion inspections, valve testing, predictive maintenance testing and troubleshooting plant equipment.
·        Support Engineering Team – Responsible for trending and monitoring critical plant systems, long range planning, troubleshooting and evaluating plant equipment performance, performing system walkdowns and recommending improvement items to plant leadership.
·        Nuclear Engineering Team - Responsible for supporting plant operations, monitoring and tracking reactor core performance, thermal heat balances, probability risk assessments and reviewing core designs.
·        Strategic Projects Engineering Team – Responsible for field engineering support on major plant modifications and projects.
 
Education and Experience Requirements:
First, Second, third- or fourth-year student actively pursuing a degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Computer, Metallurgical, Industrial, Environmental or Construction Science) or related field (Biology, Chemistry, etc.)
 
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Required:
Must be dependable, self-motivated, and detail-oriented and have excellent organizational and proofreading skills. Must possess the ability to work and communicate effectively with other company personnel. Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheets and databases preferred. Must be able to handle multiple priorities and operate efficiently and effectively in high stress environment.
 
Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required:
Must possess a valid driver’s license.
 
Working Conditions:
Normal office working conditions. Ability to meet strict deadlines and work well under pressure required. Occasionally some additional hours or weekends may be required. Must have excellent work record including good attendance.
