CDC Postgraduate Research Opportunity in Applied Public Health

*Applications will be reviewed on a rolling-basis.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: September 14, 2020

A research opportunity is currently available with the Regulatory Affairs and Clinical Guidelines Team of the Emergency Preparedness and Response Branch of the Division of Preparedness and Emerging Infections (DPEI) at the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia.

The selected participant will have the opportunity to gain experience in conducting literature search and review activities aimed at informing and supporting the development of CDC clinical guidelines. Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will analyze and synthesize the data on antiviral treatments for orthopoxviruses, to inform the development of clinical guidelines for use of antiviral treatment for orthopoxvirus infections, including an intentional release of smallpox virus.

The learning objectives of this appointment include:

  • Enhance skills in conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses through the collection, review, and analysis of published and unpublished literature and case reports pertaining to antiviral treatment for orthopoxvirus infections. As randomized controlled trials of antiviral treatment for orthopoxvirus infections are largely unfeasible, this will require the ability to synthesize data from multiple sources, to include animal and in vitro studies as well as human case reports.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical guidelines for the use of antivirals in the treatment of orthopoxvirus infections, including accidental and intentional releases of smallpox virus.
  • Enhance skills in data presentation.
  • Collaborate with and engage other staff from the National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Disease (NCEZID), other CDC centers, institutes, or offices, other federal and state organizations and partners, and international health ministries and organizations.

This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
