Student Support Liaison: Special Education


Duties & Responsibilities:  (Essential Functions of Position, Major Responsibilities, Summary of Key Duties, Special Assignments, Relationships)
Supports teacher in implementing IEP services.
Under the direction of professional staff, work with IEP students individually or in group settings to improve behavior and social skills.
Implement IEP Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) for students with challenging behaviors, including modeling and coaching building level staff who work with the student. 
Collaborate with BCBA, special education teacher, special education building facilitator, and/or building administrator to develop fading plans for students with IEPs receiving intensive behavior support from the SSL
Create individual supports for students on caseload (picture schedules, behavior skill charts, organizational systems, work systems, etc)
Maintain data and progress notes for IEP students with behavioral needs
Collaborate on a team for determining effective behavior strategies for students with IEPs
May include working with a student one-to-one to complete assigned tasks
Participate in SIT team meetings to provide consultation on Tier 2 and 3 behavior strategies
Helps to create token economy and positive reinforcements to increase and motivate appropriate behavior
Work to develop community partnerships to meet individual student needs
Assist in small group and individual instruction as supervised by a special education teacher
Support the implementation of classroom expectations, procedures and routines
Must attend all summer, evening and school year trainings as determined by building administrator and/or special education office. This includes, but is not limited to mandatory Wednesday afternoon trainings and mandatory two week training provided by the Office of Special Education in summer.
Must be willing to accept feedback from District BCBA’s, building special education teacher and building administrator and use feedback to implement changes in practices.
Must be willing and able to work with students who are explosive in nature and engage in physical and verbal aggression towards others.
Participate in crisis response for students with IEPs on his/her caseload
Assist with de-escalation of students with IEPs who are in crisis and help them return to the classroom setting successfully
Member of the building crisis response team (CPI team)
Act as a liaison between building staff who work with students on the SSL’s caseload, including communicating and debriefing with staff who work with students on caseload
Under the direction of District BCBA, building special education teacher, building special education facilitator, and/or building administrator complete fidelity checks of behavior intervention plan implementation
Keep accurate, up-to-date records on academic progress, attendance and behavior for students on caseload
Other duties as assigned


Physical Requirements of Position:  
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs,
  • Good attendance is mandatory for this position

Ability to work independently
Good oral written skills

Must be proficient in technology skills necessary to complete job duties
Must possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with diverse student population
Capable of representing school in professional manner, which includes but is not limited to maintaining confidentiality, good communication skills and appropriate dress
Experience in working with at-risk population desired
Associates degree or higher desired, high school diploma or GED required
