Historian and Librarian Assistant Member - Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park

Summary: American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, is seeking ONE Member to contribute to maintaining the park library and providing historical interpretive programs alongside park staff. Due to Covid-19, local candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for this position.

Start Date: Early November 2020
End Date: 22 weeks from start date

Location: Skagway, Alaska 
Location Details: Headlines screamed "Gold!" The dream of a better life catapulted thousands of people to Alaska and the Yukon Territory. Their journey shaped them, and changed the people they encountered and the north forever. Today, the park remembers the trails, boomtowns, and stories of the Klondike Gold Rush.

Living Allowance: ACE Member is expected to contribute ~30 hours/week and will receive a living allowance of $564/week to help offset the costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.
 
Position Description: This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals.
The ACE member's duties will include:
  • Maintaining the park library, where many of the important historical documents critical for historical research, reside. This involves accessioning and filing or re-filing historical documents such as photographs, diaries, books, articles, and other items in their appropriate places in the park library. It also involves maintaining and updating electronic databases for the library books and historic photographs. 
  • Conducting background historical research on gold rush era Stampeders and historic buildings dating to the same period for the park and members of the public. This involves gathering historical information from photographs, government records, maps, local newspapers, diaries, letters, business records and other documents (including online resources) and placing this information into easily understood narratives. 
  • Scanning historic photographs, maps and other documents (assembling segments, restoring image quality and legibility as required) for permanent accessioning into the park's growing electronic files.
  • Assisting Park Historian and Curator in other duties as assigned.
 
Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Eligible members must meet standard requirements of completing at least 640 hours and utilize their certificate before the age of 30.
 
Qualifications: 
Required
  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner. 
  • Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.
  • This position is funded through the Public Land Corps Act which has specific program requirements.
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age to apply (members must be 21+ to apply for an ACE position that requires or anticipates operation of agency or ACE vehicles for duties).
  • PLC benefits extend to members up to 30 years old. Military Veterans up to 35 are encouraged to apply for these as well.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).
  • Willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
 
Preferred:
  • Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a minimum of a bachelor's degree and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as history or anthropology.
  • Ability and willingness to interact with members of the public in a clear, logical and professional manner and the ability to write and speak in a clear, logical, and organized manner and have good penmanship.
