CDC Public Health Analysis Internship

A fellowship opportunity is available in the Surveillance and Data Management Branch (SDMB) of the Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP) of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention (NCHHSTP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.
DSTDP’s mission is to provide national leadership, research, policy development and scientific information to help people live safer, healthier lives by preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their complications. The mission of SDMB is to capture STD morbidity data, assess STD burden and trends, and develop and conduct sentinel surveillance of STDs and STD adverse outcomes. These surveillance activities provide a foundation for the annual STD Surveillance Report. Additionally, SDMB evaluates and provides recommendations for improving STD surveillance systems and provides guidance on the inclusion of STD data elements into information systems that can electronically receive, store, and transmit STD morbidity and case management data.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will have the opportunity to learn about data management and data analysis methods using population surveillance data; data analysis, management, and visualization; and the creation of an annual surveillance report.
Research activities may include assisting with:
- Developing and managing data analysis guides, data documentation, data management procedures, reports, and analysis;
- Developing SAS and R programs to conduct data analyses, data management, and data visualizations;
- Developing innovative data visualization products for hard copy and digital publications, presentations, and communication materials;
- Coordinating the annual dissemination of STD surveillance data through web-based applications, reports, and presentations;
- Coordinating the tracking and management of issues that arise during data quality reviews;
- Analyzing and managing data collected from multiple data sources using various methodologies
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: Fall 2020
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
