Internship - Veterinary

Reports to:   Veterinary Services Manager
Position Purpose:  Trans Ova Genetics is offering a summer internship position that is designed to give veterinary students who have a passion for food animals medicine hands-on and real-world experience in Food Animal Medicine while further developing their veterinary skills. The intern will work primarily as a member of the Veterinary Services team, but may have the opportunity to assist in other departments during the course of the internship.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist Veterinary Services team with a broad array of procedures in bovine, small ruminants, and porcine species.
  • Execute tasks associated with anesthesia protocols and anesthetic monitoring during surgery.
  • Assist in providing neonatal care to Elite calves, Cloned animals and small ruminants.
  • Maintain accurate records of procedures and data entry.
  • Provide and implement low stress handling of animals through working facilities.
  • Understand and become proficient with evaluating animals for disease, sickness and well-being with neonates, growing animals, and adult animals.
  • Assist veterinarians with pregnancy documentation, vaccination administration, ear tagging, tattooing, and general chute-side processing procedures.
  • Assess animals for dehydration and administer IV treatments as needed.
  • Collect diagnostic testing specimens for submission.
  • Prepare and clean up surgical suites and chute rooms.
  • Successfully complete a project and presentation on a topic related to repro or TOG.
  • Follow Trans Ova’s policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a professional image reflective of Trans Ova’s industry position.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education Requirements:
Students must have completed their undergraduate degree and be enrolled in a Veterinary Medicine program.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Job requires ability to work in adverse/outdoor conditions, good physical mobility and above average strength/conditioning. Animals, especially if handled improperly, can cause injury. Ability to lift 50 lbs. and be on feet walking, or standing for long periods of time.
Other skills/experience:
Students must have the ability to travel.
Must have valid driver’s license.
Must be able to operate a company vehicle.
Must be organized and have effective communication skills.
Excellent cattle handling skills and patience are required.
