Fall Intern Reporting Sports-2021

JOB DESCRIPTION *
The Dallas Morning News is looking for a recent college graduate to join its sports department for a 12-week internship this fall 2021.

The intern, who should have already completed internships at high-level media organizations, will primarily cover high school sports as part of the award-winning SportsDayHS team.

The News, one of the most decorated sports departments in the country, provides unparalleled coverage of high school athletics, with an emphasis on football and issues facing high schools and young athletes.

The internship is 40 hours per week and pays $15/hour. Interns are expected to have reliable transportation for a sprawling coverage area that includes more than 150 schools. The News doesn’t provide housing but works with the intern to find an ideal living situation. The intern should be prepared to start in mid August.

Though the internship is focused on preps, the intern will also get to cover other GA work as it comes up, including covering collegiate and professional sports.

Successful interns can juggle daily blog assignments, weekly features, trend stories and bigger-picture enterprise -- all while developing relationships with area sources and working as part of a team that emphasizes both quality and quantity. Candidates should have a digital-first mindset, as well as experience working with data, open records and breaking news.

The job is recognized by former interns as both tough and challenging -- but one that prepares them for high-level work. Over the past half decade, former interns have quickly landed jobs at The Washington Post, Hartford Courant, The Oklahoman, The Undefeated and The News itself.
In your application, please submit a resume, cover letter and five clips that show a range of different stories. Contact assistant sports editor Tommy Magelssen via tmagelssen@dallasnews.com with any questions.

Application deadline is October 30th

Applicants must be enrolled in college and working toward a degree (associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s or doctorate) or they may have graduated within six months prior to the internship start date.

Previous daily newspaper experience is requested.
