Careers in Art History Paid Internships

Call for Applications

Deadline for applications: Friday, October 16, 2020, 5:00 p.m. EST

Undergraduate students and recent graduates, from all backgrounds, who wish to gain professional experience working in art museums and art history research centers are invited to apply for a paid professional development internship. No prior museum experience is required to apply. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about curatorial practice, collections management, art conservation, oral history, public relations, and archival practices, as well as research and publications. The internships will provide a broad overview of professional opportunities and skills that are useful not only in the field of art history, but also transferable to other pursuits.

If you are an undergraduate student currently enrolled at an educational institution in the USA or Canada (or currently on pause from your enrolled coursework), or if you recently graduated and are interested in learning more about how museums work, we encourage you to apply. Applicants enrolled or recently graduated (within one year) from the following institutions may apply: two-year colleges; four-year colleges/universities; professional, technical, vocational, and trade schools; advanced degree programs; and other educational institutions offering qualifying degrees or certificates.

Scope of the award

Up to twenty awards will be made and interns will work together in groups. Each internship will last for four weeks, with daily Zoom sessions of one to two hours, which will introduce participants to a variety of museum practices and career paths. There will be additional time for group discussion and independent work, culminating in a different project each week. Each week, interns will be hosted by a different institution. All interns will be assigned a mentor for the duration of their internship. At the end of the program, a career development and résumé-writing workshop will be provided, and all interns will make a brief presentation on a project they completed.

Interns will receive a stipend of $1,300 (USD).

The internships will be offered this year from November 9 to December 11 (with a weeklong break at Thanksgiving).

Application process

Applications must be submitted online and include a résumé detailing educational background and work/volunteer experience; and contact information for one reference who will be contacted for shortlisted candidates. References should be able to speak to the applicant’s academic abilities and interests.

Applications can be submitted online here.

Further details about the internship can be found here.
