Prevention Effectiveness (PE) Fellowship

The Prevention Effectiveness (PE) Fellowship builds CDC’s capacity to assess the effectiveness and value of public health interventions and facilitate evidence-based decision-making. The goal of this fellowship is to ensure there are well-trained health economists with expertise in policy analysis and skills to consider economic issues in public health programs. For more than 20 years, CDC has recruited and trained highly effective health economists through the PE Fellowship, the largest 2-year postdoctoral training program of its kind in the United States.

While most of the learning occurs in the field, the PE Fellowship sponsors a core set of didactic trainings that focus on five competency domains:
•Analysis and assessment
•Foundations for leadership
•Interpersonal and professional communication skills
•Policy analysis
•Public health science and practice

The PE Fellowship collaborates with the Health Economics Research Group and CDC’s Office of the Associate Director for Policy to coordinate a vibrant Prevention Effectiveness Seminar Series at CDC that engages and welcomes eminent economists and policy analysts to share real world examples of prevention effectiveness in action.

A core value of prevention effectiveness involves considering economic issues when evaluating public health policy. The collective experience in quantitative policy analysis and capability with considering economic issues provides communities across the nation with the information and tools needed to protect health through disease prevention, health promotion, and health threat preparedness.
