Visual Newscast Intern (REMOTE) - Winter/Spring 2021

A thriving, mission-driven multimedia organization, NPR produces award-winning news, information, and music programming in partnership with hundreds of independent public radio stations across the nation. The NPR audience values information, creativity, curiosity, and social responsibility – and our employees do too. We are innovators and leaders in diverse fields, from journalism and digital media to IT and development. Every day, our employees and member stations touch the lives of millions worldwide and that includes our interns.
From day one, interns at NPR are given real-world, hands-on responsibilities. Working alongside top professionals in the field, interns do meaningful work across a variety of departments at NPR.
Across our organization, we’re building a workplace where collaboration is essential, diverse voices are heard, and inclusion is the key to our success.
NPR’s Winter/Spring 2021 Internship Program will be fully remote.
Program Duration: January 11 - April 16, 2021
Visual Newscast is the engine behind daily news video at NPR, building visuals specifically for multimodal devices such as the Amazon Echo Show and Google Home.
Our work starts with creating videos for the latest devices on the market, and includes feeding established platforms like Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook with a steady stream of news video. An internship on our team is an opportunity to hone your skills as a visual journalist and embrace an emerging visual platform for news.
NPR has found that smart devices have been key to attracting a younger, more diverse audience, which is a core goal for NPR. We are looking for interns that can help innovate in this space.
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
  • News Video and Photo Production: Our team works under tight deadlines driven by the news cycle. You may be called on to contribute a video clip by the top of the next hour, but you will also have opportunities to work on projects that extend over several days and contextualize daily news events. Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, including Premiere Pro and After Effects, is encouraged.
  • Editing: You will be part of a team that is constantly piloting new projects. We’re looking to improve our product, and want someone who can contribute to the look of NPR’s news videos with stylish graphics, After Effects templates and replicable video elements. You may also be called upon to help us analyze what’s working and brainstorm around what could work better.
  • Research and Gather Source Material: You may be called upon to research video and photos, or to rifle through national archive material to build upon our source library.
WHO CAN APPLY?
  • LOCATION: Must be planning to work from the United States and authorized to work in the United States throughout the Winter/Spring 2021 internship dates.
  • EDUCATION: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship.
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • We’re looking for candidates that have a strong photojournalism background. An interest in editing, or experience with video/photo editing is a nice plus. It’s also helpful if you’ve completed at least one photojournalism-focused internship prior to applying (let us know if you have!), though it’s not necessary. A portfolio, however, is required.
  • We also want folks who can tell us what they would like to accomplish during their time at NPR. What do you want to learn? What do you want to try? We try to shape each internship around our intern, so we rely on you to tell us what goals you have for your time with us!
  • Experience with the Adobe Creative Suite, including Premiere Pro and After Effects, is encouraged.
Applications close on Monday, November 2, 2020 at 5pm ET.
Does this sound like you? If so, we want to hear from you. All applications must include a resume and cover letter to be considered.
