Intergenerational Phone Call Visitor

Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly's philosophy, programs and activities are focused on alleviating loneliness among elders in Chicago. The need for social interaction is critical to the human spirit - we believe that nurturing the soul is as important as feeding the body. Instead of our regular visiting program, where interns visit elders in person, or go on outings, Intergenerational Phone Visitors will provide special experiences to all our isolated elders through regular phone calls during the school year. In addition, interns may also help deliver grocery bags, birthday bags, or holiday gifts to the front door of elders’ homes.

Specific Job Skills Required
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to elders’ needs.
  • Good phone conversation skills.
  •  A personal value system, which emphasizes respect for the individual and a belief that friendship is essential in the lives of all people, especially isolated elders who are living alone.
  • Able to effectively relate to others, along with the abilities to listen attentively and initiate conversation. You will use these skills with elders who have limited social contacts.
  • Strong social skills, along with creativity.
  • Strong ability to work in a team and independently to achieve team goals.
  • Have valid U.S. or international driver’s license and car insurance and reliable car is a plus.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Call on a weekly basis 4-5 elders to check on them and chat.
  • Coordinate and deliver bags (food bags, or birthday bags, or holiday bags) to the front door of the elder’s building or home, if/when appropriate, and engage with the elder outside, while practicing social distancing.
  • Participate in the planning, execution, of the preparation of the bags.
  • Constant interaction with our elders, from initiating conversation, listening to and sharing stories, and documenting personal histories.
  • Perform other duties as they arise.
Learning Objectives
  • Organizational Management: Phone Call Visitor will be able to plan, coordinate and implement projects. Analysis/Problem Solving: Interns will be able to utilize effective problem-solving skills.
  • Core Relationships: Interns will demonstrate cultural and social sensitivity towards elders and peers.
Time Commitment
  • 5-10 hours a week.
