Northeastern South Dakota is located in the heart of the Prairie Pothole Region and encompasses a landscape comprised of native grasslands, prairie potholes, and agricultural lands. This administrative region includes 421 of the 720 state owned and managed Game Production Areas. The area is well known for waterfowl hunting and some of the best fishing in the Midwest. The area provides a unique landscape with an abundance of wildlife and management opportunities.
The Regional Supervisor position provides supervisory, fiscal and administrative oversight to a diverse number of Division of Wildlife Regional Operations programs in northeastern South Dakota. The position provides administrative work direction and supervisory oversight to regional wildlife and habitat managers and supervisors in the implementation and delivery of agency services, programs and functions. Regional Supervisor coordinates and collaborates efforts, resources, and management activities with the Terrestrial, Aquatics and Law Enforcement sections. Position is challenged to communicate effectively with a wide diversity of public interests in managing fish and wildlife resources, public lands and waters, private land access programs, conservation law enforcement functions and associated public outreach and education programs.
This position is exempt from the Civil Service Act.
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
Applicants will have at least five years of successful supervisory/management experience.
Knowledge of:
  • public administration as it applies to the conservation, management and protection of fish and wildlife resources and management of public lands and waters of the state;
  • biological and social factors affecting fish and wildlife management, fish and wildlife habitat and populations;
  • GFP Commission regulations development processes and functions;
  • principles and techniques of effective public involvement and external communications;
  • state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to the conservation and protection of fish and wildlife resources;
  • effective personnel management techniques used to supervise employees in diverse job classifications;
  • fiscal management standards and procedures.
Skill to:
  • foster a positive working atmosphere
  • establish collaborative communication lines amongst field staff, between divisions and sections, and up to the central office;
  • assess and provide direction during high stress and complex situations.
Ability to:
  • be a leader and inspire trust;
  • implement Department priorities and work direction;
  • promote effective interaction and foster decision-making among diverse public interests;
  • effectively plan and organize work activities and prioritize task completion to meet schedules;
  • and deadlines, both long- and short-term, for diverse regional programs;

  • develop policies, procedures and work direction and define standards of performance for specific regional programs and associated staff;
  • develop standards to effectively evaluate employee performance;
  • ensure effective communication amongst regional employees and statewide program managers and administrators;
  • respond effectively to requests for information from GFP Commissioners, state legislators, Governor’s Office staff, sportsman and agricultural-related organizations and other publics;
  • evaluate program effectiveness and initiate needed changes.
