Landscape Operations Internship

Landscape Operations Internship Description

Objective:      To help promote Kimmel Orchard & Vineyard (KOVE) while learning skills                            related to orchard operations. All KOVE interns will receive cross-training in                                multiple areas and must be open to other duties as assigned.

Schedule:      Monday-Friday; 40-45 hours per week; some weekends required; flexibility available
 
Wage:            $12/hour; generous employee discount; subsidized summer housing available near Kimmel Orchard & Vineyard

                          Jesse Mendez – Orchard Team Leader
                         Jonathan Hood – Assistant Orchard Team Leader
                          Shayna Murrell – Business & Marketing Associate/Apple Barn Team Leader

Planned Projects:
  •  Visualize and plan out new landscaping options for the Kimmel gardens.
  •  Assist with the development of new plantings and trellis systems
  • Update and create a new map of current landscape layout including the nature trail
  • Assist in planting floral beds around the property with plant identifiers
  • Communicate with UNL Bee Lab to maintain healthy pollinators
  • Assist in Apple Barn retail operations
  • Photography of orchard events and landscapes         

Eligibility and Preferred Skills:
  •  Students interested in alternative agronomy, landscape, horticulture, and/or other plant sciences
  • Highly motivated in finding information and answers
  • Ability to prioritize/execute and achieve desired project goals
  • High level of communication skills and an initiative to learn
  • Efficient in landscape management and knowledge of plant varietals
  • 19 years of age preferable

Responsibilities:
  • Mowing, planting, harvesting, and overall landscape layout of all Kimmel surrounding gardens, including the landscape around the Kimmel house.
  •  Maintenance of the educational trail system located throughout the property
-Weed control
- Planting of all flower beds
- Applying wood chips as needed
  • Conduct soil sampling
  • Assist with planting and harvesting
  • Assist with tours of the orchard over the summer
