2021 Gap-Year Regenerative Medicine Fellowship

The SRF Postbaccalaureate Fellowship Program offers former undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct biomedical research to combat diseases of aging, such as cancer, atherosclerosis, and Parkinson’s Disease. During the gap-year, program participants will have the opportunity to hone their scientific communication skills in preparation for applications and interviews for pharma/biotech jobs, graduate school, and medical school. Under the guidance of a scientific mentor, each Postbaccalaureate Fellow will be responsible for his or her own research project in such areas as genetic engineering and stem cell research. The Fellowship Program emphasizes development of both laboratory and communication skills to develop well-rounded future scientists, healthcare professionals, and policy makers.

The Postbaccalaureate Fellowship Program sets itself apart from many other internship program with its focus on the development of scientific communication skills in addition to enhancing laboratory and critical thinking skills. Throughout the program, fellows are guided through intensive writing assignments that simulate documents scientists are often asked to produce, such as grant proposals. The communication training culminates in a presentation of the results of their work to peers, mentors, and other scientists. Other program highlights include eligibility for international students (via OPT authorization) and work schedule flexibility for interviews.

Program Learning Objectives include:
1. Plan and execute an independent research project.
2. Learn new technical skills.
3. Learn how to explain scientific concepts to a non-scientific audience.
4. Learn how to write a simple grant proposal.
5. Give a formal research presentation to scientists.
