Nature Instructor

JOB SUMMARY: Happy Hollow Summer Camp, which hosts 10 weeks of overnight camp for children ages 7-14, is seeking an enthusiastic, responsible, and creative Nature Program Instructor to provide a safe and memorable experience for our campers. Our Nature Program Instructor is responsible for planning, organizing, and leading activities which help our campers develop an appreciation and knowledge of the natural world during each week of camp. The ideal candidate should be an excellent multitasker with a genuine passion for working with and empowering young people.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:
  • College student or at least 19 years of age
  • Education and/or experience in environmental nature study (documented)
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors
  • At least 1-2 years of youth leadership experience preferred
  • Ability to set up a nature program and to teach curriculum to staff and campers
  • Ability to accept supervision and feedback
  • Good character, integrity, and ability to adapt to a camp setting
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
  • Physical ability to participate in strenuous activities (hiking, swimming, climbing)
  • First Aid/CPR certification (camp will provide)
  • Ability to pass a background check
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Abide by all camp rules
  • Successfully complete pre-camp staff training
  • Set up nature center during staff training to include: inventory, rules, lesson plans, equipment inspection, building and trails inspection, and cleaning
  • Provide the each nature session be age appropriate by preparing lesson plans each week
  • Conduct orientation to all new participants that includes: rules, safety procedures, and proper use of equipment
  • Teach staff their responsibilities during staff training
  • Teach and monitor proper use of equipment
  • When instructor is not present, insure that all doors are locked and secure
  • Assist in coordinating nature activities with special events and themes
  • Plan alternate programs to be used in inclement weather
  • Keep nature center area neat and orderly
  • Inform the program director of needed supplies, preferably one week in advance
  • Submit to program director, weekly evaluations of nature program
  • Prepare achievement recognition awards
  • Assist in organizing and conducting other camp activities
  • Assist with camper supervision in the cabin, at meals, bed time, on duty, and all-camp activities
  • Insure all equipment is properly inventoried, cleaned and stored at the end of camp
  • Other duties as assigned
