Field Mosquito Technician

Brief Definition
Working outdoors under general direction, locate and treat mosquito and black fly larval habitats, and perform surveillance of deer ticks according to District guidelines.

Examples of Duties        
Responsibilities include:
Locate, sample, and treat mosquito larvae habitats including wetlands, and water-holding containers. Calculate proper dosage and apply granular pesticides to larval habitats.
Collect adult mosquito samples and occasionally operate ULV (ultra-low volume) sprayers to control adult populations especially if disease vectors are found.
Document all field activities and insecticide use on paper and in our data base via smart phone app.
 
Occasionally duties include:
Help load helicopters for aerial treatment of large wetlands.
Pick up tires that may breed mosquitoes for recycling.
Sample and treat larval black fly populations in rivers and streams.
Sample for deer tick populations.
Participate in outreach activities like county and state fair information booths or parades.
Perform other job-related duties as required or directed.

Employment Standards
Education and Experience
Minimum 18 years old, Good driving record, training on the job.

 Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills
Ability to learn mosquito control methods and map reading.
GPS navigation and smart phone use.
Perform moderately demanding physical activities.
Learn and perform operation of District vehicles and mosquito control equipment.
Follow all District and OSHA safety requirements.
Must be at least 18 and have a valid driver’s license.

Physical Requirements
Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Lift and carry up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to manipulate, lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Some sedentary work that involves sitting. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. Incumbents will be subjected to outdoor work and operation of District vehicles and equipment.
