Associate Chemist - Analytical Labs (10122)

Perform difficult qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses involving mainly HPLC and UPLC instrumentation equipped with specialized detectors to conduct assays on stability and finished drug products. Duties to include:
Compliance
  • Follow Good Manufacturing Procedures (cGMP) using standard operating procedures, USP, EP and EPA monographs, UIP or client supplied methods to perform analytical processes.
  • Update existing or write new operating procedures (SOPs) for routine to moderately difficult standard.
Analysis and Development
  • Perform:
  • HPLC, UPLC, LCMS or GC analysis on cleaning validation, dissolution, QC, and stability samples
  • USP monograph testing
  • UV-Vis analysis and pH testing of QC and stability samples
  • Read methods/prepare samples/document all procedures
  • Diagnose and resolve laboratory equipment, testing procedure, and system malfunctions
  • Calculate results obtained in analyses using software packages associated with the instrumentation or spreadsheets.
  • Write and revise analytical methods.
Technical Documentation Origination
  • Write client reports of a routine nature.
Leadership
  • Prioritize projects through coordination with pharmacist and clients to assign to analysts.
  • Provide technical and regulatory support to staff for instrumentation, software and analytical problems.
Human Resources
  • Train analysts and other personnel on equipment and HPLC and GC methods
Financial Responsibility
  • Communicate need to order supplies or equipment.

University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals is a Food and Drug Administration-registered pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, providing expertise in contract pharmaceutical development services to clients around the world. This is an exciting time to join UIP, as the business continues to grow in capabilities, new clients and revenue. In 2020 the College of Pharmacy will be moving into a new $96.3 million College of Pharmacy building. The lower level of this new building will be home to the UIP new sterile products manufacturing area which will be approximately 16,000 square feet and will increase UIP batch size capacity approximately 5-fold to 20,000 vials/batch.

Education Requirement
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or a science with emphasis on analytical chemistry, or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a similar type of laboratory.
Experience Required
Experience (typically 3-5 years) performing laboratory testing in a regulated environment including:
  • Analytical chemistry (UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR, pH, moisture determination, titrations, etc.)
  • High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) or Gas Chromatography (GC) with associated software packages used in pharmaceutical quality control or similar industry
  • Laboratory testing including the ability to independently troubleshoot analytical method and instrumentation issues
  • Documentation of analytical results in a regulated environment
  • Standard Operating Procedures
  • Collaboration and Embracing Diversity, Service Excellence/Customer Focus and Positive Impact/Achieving Results
  • Effective communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Microsoft Office (i.e., Word, Excel and Outlook)
Demonstrated increased responsibility operating laboratory equipment including the ability to independently troubleshoot laboratory equipment and technical systems problems
Proven ability to work independently with a high level of discretion.
Physical requirements with or without reasonable accommodation:
  • Achieve passing criteria in visual testing (minimum of 20/20 visual acuity with or without corrected lenses)*
  • Be able to wear a respirator*
  • Move up to and including 25#
*Evaluation will be conducted by the University of Iowa Employee Health Clinic. 
**Applicants may provide current respirator clearance certification dated within six months of the date of the offer, from a similar health clinic or health provider in lieu of the evaluation by UI Employee Health Clinic.
Baseline bloodwork will be required at time of hire and annually thereafter due to possible exposure to hazardous chemicals.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience (typically 1-2 years) performing and troubleshooting:
  • Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (LCMS) with associated software packages used in pharmaceutical quality control or similar industry.
Highly Desirable Qualifications
Experience and/or knowledge of:
  • current Good Manufacturing (cGMP) or similar regulations,
  • University of Iowa Environmental Health and Safety chemical inventory system,
  • United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and European Pharmacopeia (EP) training.
