Environmental Safety and Health Specialist

Position Summary:

Daily review of facility for pick-up, processing, packing, and storage, of hazardous and non-hazardous waste created by manufacturing operations. Maintenance of facility Hazardous Waste containment areas for compliance with Federal and State environmental regulations. Periodic monitoring / recording of various environmental control panel readings, and other environmental measurements using appropriate equipment. Preparation / loading of hazardous and non-hazardous manufacturing waste for shipment to certified waste disposal contractors.

  • Conduct daily tours of manufacturing areas for pick-up of hazardous / non-hazardous industrial waste. Transfer waste to central collection point, separate incompatible materials, package and label containers for shipment in accordance with Federal and State DOT regulations.
  • Process hazardous chemicals using a Solvent Recovery Still for re-cycling of spent solvents and other industrial chemicals./span>
  • Must have a sound understanding of electrical, electronic and mechanical systems and their related components.
  • Daily movement and positioning using a forklift or hand-truck, 55 gallon drums of hazardous and non-hazardous chemicals with weights of 275 – 600 pounds.
  • Periodic control of large quantities of industrial wastewater using Sulfuric Acid and Caustic Soda to adjust pH to conform with Industrial Wastewater Discharge Permit.
  • Periodic monitoring and recording of various environmental control panel gauges, and performs other environmental measurements using instruments.
  • Use of computer equipment to generate forms labels and other environmental data.
  • Routinely uses knowledge of Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 29, 40, 49, for personal and employee safety in the facility, and compliance with City, County, State, and Federal safety, fire protection, and environmental regulations.
  • Performs periodic collection of industrial wastewater samples for shipment to Environmental testing laboratories for analysis.
  • Utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as needed to perform work with hazardous materials.
  • Operates material handling equipment.
  • Moves furniture, machinery, and equipment.
  • Erect staging / rigging hoists.
  • May perform Industrial grounds keeping operations.
  • Scrutinize every facet of job and report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials, and unusual conditions to leadperson/supervisor.
  • Perform housekeeping chores as department requirements dictate.
  • Maintains all records, files, and reports pertaining to activities and supports general records maintenance for other EHS functions as assigned.
  • Initial and recurrent annual training in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120 and 40 CFR 265.16.

Required Education And Experience:

Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Engineering/Sciences, Safety Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, one of the pure sciences (chemistry, biology or physics) or an engineering discipline (electrical, chemical, mechanical or industrial). Initial and recurrent annual training in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.120 and 40 CFR 265.16.
