Summer 2021 State Fiscal Project Campaigns Intern
The State Fiscal Project (SFP) works to ensure that all communities are economically secure and all people have the opportunity to thrive through responsible state tax and budget policies. In addition, SFP coordinates and supports the State Priorities Partnership, a network of 43 state-level organizations engaged in state fiscal policy work, and helps state partners in the network and beyond engage in federal policy debates.
The SFP Campaigns Team supports the advocacy and campaign strategies of groups in the State Priorities Partnership and other state-based organizations, including helping them develop campaign plans, build coalitions and partnerships, educate policymakers and the public, and shape the public debate on key budget, tax, and safety net issues.
Campaigns interns play a critical role in this work. Interns research and track key state and federal policy action; attend and report on meetings of partners, allies, and other related organizations; and complete other special projects.
Qualifications:
- Strong interest in the Center’s mission and the issues we work on; interest in community engagement, politics, and social change; and a desire to gain issue campaign and/or advocacy experience
- Prior experience in political or issue-area campaigns, advocacy, or government highly desired but not required
- Academic or professional experience in political science, government, politics, policy, social work, community organizing, and related disciplines can also qualify
- Strong writing, research, organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently and meet deadlines
- Demonstrated interest in economic and/or racial equity and the role of public policy in achieving greater equity
- Education: No preference
Successful interns will have a commitment to the Center’s mission to improve the well-being of low- and moderate-income people and advance racial equity as part of the Center’s work.
To expand the diversity of voices that speak with authority in federal and state policy debates, the Center’s internship program identifies highly motivated candidates — with particular attention to candidates having experience with communities that are underrepresented in policy debates — with a demonstrated interest in working on public policies that affect low-income and diverse communities and have implications for racial equity.

Compensation:
- Undergraduate students receive $15.00 per hour.
- Students with a bachelor's degree receive $16.00 per hour.
- Graduate students receive $17.00 per hour.
- Students with a master’s or law degree receive $18.00 per hour.
- Doctoral students may receive $17.00 - $20.00, depending on progress towards completion of degree requirements, relevant coursework, and research.
