Job Description
Provides instructional, consultation, and other support services to gifted & talented students within Columbus City Schools. 

Instructional
  • Identifies students who perform at or show the potential to perform at outstanding levels.
  • Provides high-quality instruction based on best practices to a classroom of identified students in assigned grade level or subject area classrooms.
  •    Develops articulated curriculum that is in depth and requires high levels of thinking.
  •    Provides opportunities to create extensions and connections across disciplines for classroom teachers.
  •    Responds and teaches appropriately to address the social and emotional needs of gifted students.
  •    Uses tiering, flexible grouping, and other differentiation strategies that challenge gifted students.
  •    Implements curriculum models and educational initiatives from the Gifted & Talented Office.
  •    Plans lessons and activities with other Gifted Specialists on a monthly basis.
  •    Collects and analyze formative and summative assessment date for the purpose of planning of instruction.
  •    Maintains a grade book and completes report cards.
  •    Constructs and keeps Written Education Plans for your gifted students.
  •    Coordinates instruction with general education classroom teachers.
  •    Utilizes Blackboard or other learning management system to deliver instruction via the web.
  •    Plans and executes academic options and enrichment programs.
Consultation
  •    Consults with school personnel about ways to develop and adapt curriculum, materials and teaching strategies for gifted learners and promote the cluster classroom teacher's use of tiering, flexible grouping, and other differentiation strategies to challenge gifted and high-achieving students.
  •   Works collegially with the staff of the assigned buildings.
  •   Develop and facilitate staff-development activities.
  •   Provides teaching demonstrations to model appropriate teaching practices or classroom management strategies.
  •   Communicates with parents and others about the characteristics and educational needs of gifted students.
  •   Work with cluster teachers and gifted classroom teachers to determine short and/or long-term goal setting for gifted students' evaluation/assessment.
  •   Advises school personnel in the strategic planning process and development of SCIP.
  •   Educates school staff to address the needs of twice exceptional students.
  •    Works with cluster teachers to develop and carry out appropriate performance-based assessments.
  •   Provides support, as a leader, to all school personnel on gifted education issues.
  •   Serves as a liaison and advocate among gifted students, school personnel, parents and community members.
  •   Collaborates with school personnel in regards to referrals for individual alternative testing.
  •   Shares with building staff, administrators, and parents the Acceleration Policy which was adopted by the Board of Education in August of 2006. Facilitate whole grade and subject accelerations within a school. 
Other
  •    Assists with individual student testing.
  •    Communicates with supervisor, building principals, and team members as needed.
  •    Submits an exit summary to the principal directly after school visits (cc: supervisor through digital dropbox).
  •    Attends and participate in bi-weekly Professional Learning Communities (PLC).
  •    Submits monthly calendars and follow other related office procedures.
  •    Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education.  Master's degree may be required for select roles.
  • Valid Ohio teaching certification.  Gifted and Talented K-12 certification or endorsement.
  • Minimum of three years classroom teaching
