Postdoctoral Research Opportunity in Veterinary Sciences

ARS Office/Lab and LocationA research opportunity is currently available with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) at the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility located in Manhattan, Kansas.

Research ProjectThis fellowship is a learning opportunity for a veterinarian to gain experience in the development of animal health vaccines which will be a key part of the ARS research program at NBAF.

Learning ObjectivesIn collaboration with Midwest Veterinary Services, the fellow can expect to gain competencies in:
  • Participating within a highly-regulated research environment, following standards set by the IACUC, IBC, FDA, USDA, EPA, and other relevant agencies.
  • Assisting with developing and training staff of the use of facility-specific standard operating procedures.
  • Preparing study protocols, data collection forms, and animal use plans for regulatory and animal welfare submissions.
  • Research participation in study design and execution of animal study to test an ARS developed product.
  • Assessing study design alternatives for power calculations and statistical considerations through purposeful statistical training and exercises with Kansas State University Center for Outcomes Research and Epidemiology.
  • Preparing study reports and participating in statistical analysis.
  • Hands on training and demonstration of proficiency: Animal care, safe handling and specimen collection in a biocontainment facility.
  • Live-phase infectious disease studies in support of a product registration.

Anticipated Appointment Start DateStart date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment(s) will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant(s) will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR) only.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
