Aspire Core Teacher - Summer

The Aspire Program of Hathaway Brown is a tuition-free academic enrichment and leadership development program for high-achieving girls in grades 6-8 from low-income communities in the Greater Cleveland area. Core Teachers join Aspire from colleges and universities around the country to implement creative and engaging classes to support the academic needs of middle school girls. Core Teachers gain real experience in the classroom under the guidance of an experienced teacher who is willing to provide support as you learn. Core Teachers design, plan, and teach academic classes (Math, Science, English Language Arts, or Social Studies). In addition, Core Teachers teach workshops, influenced by their own expertise and personal interests, that broaden the exposure of Aspire students by covering a wide range of topics not often covered in middle schools. You do not need to be an education major (or have any teaching experience) to work as a Core Teacher at Aspire.

Aspire Core Teachers (CTs) are responsible for implementing creative, engaging classes that support the academic needs of middle school girls. CTs design, plan, and teach three sections, with approximately 12 students in each, of English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, or Math.

While mentored by an experienced teacher, CTs are the lead teachers in the classroom. They fulfill all responsibilities associated with teaching classes, including:

• selecting activities

• class planning and preparation

• student assessments

CTs also work on collaborative grade-level teams to design and execute leadership seminars. Eighth-grade CTs collaborate to design and implement weekly half-day leadership seminars and participate in an overnight trip to Dearborn, Michigan.

CTs share their expertise and personal interests in afternoon workshops of their own design. Offerings such as Dance, Drama, World Language, Visual Arts, Entrepreneurship, and Robotics broaden students’ exposure by covering a wide range of topics not often covered in most middle schools.
