Epidemiology & Surveillance Research Fellowship
The Extremity Trauma & Amputation Center of Excellence (EACE) is a unique organization within the DoD consisting of teams of researchers embedded at the point of care within multiple Military Treatment Facilities across the nation. In line with the congressionally directed mission of the EACE, the research efforts undertaken focus on the mitigation, treatment and rehabilitation of traumatic extremity injuries and amputations with a specific focus on translating their findings into clinical practice to improve the care of injured Service Members and Veterans.
Under the guidance of a mentor, the selected participant will have the opportunity to contribute to the development and execution of a portfolio of epidemiology-based projects which are aimed at assessing the near- and long-term health outcomes for a cohort of Service members who have sustained traumatic extremity injuries. The location of this opportunity is noted as Bethesda, Maryland; however, location may vary.
Key education and training aspects of this EACE Epidemiology & Surveillance Research Fellowship opportunity will be to:
- Gain exposure to various aspects of research projects within the Department of Defense by participating in ongoing collaborative research projects
- Conducts continuous surveillance of medical information databases within the Department of Defense, Department of Veterans Affairs, and/or Civilian sector
- Collect, process, analyze, and interpret data
- Perform descriptive and inferential statistical analyses
- Participate in the preparation abstracts for professional conferences and/or manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals
Appointment Length
This appointment is a nine-month research appointment, with the possibility to be renewed for additional research periods. Appointments may be extended depending on funding availability, project assignment, program rules, and availability of the participant.
Participant Benefits
Participants will receive a stipend to be determined by EACE. Stipends are typically based on the participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other benefits may include the following:

Nature of Appointment
The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOD, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.
Qualifications
Strongly preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience in the fields of biostatistics, public health or a related field as it relates to performing epidemiology and/or surveillance-based research projects, specific research background in the area of extremity trauma, and a track record of publication and excellent technical writing skills.
Minimum Education/Training Requirements:
- Degree from an accredited institution in biostatistics, public health, or a related field
Physical Capabilities:
- Long periods of standing, sitting, and walking
Research Environment:
- The research environment is that of a multi-disciplinary research organization within the Department of Defense

- Degree: Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree, or Doctoral Degree received within the last 60 months or anticipated to be received by 6/30/2021 12:00:00 AM.
