the Department of Medicine at Hennepin Healthcare
The HHRI invites applications for a Post-Doctoral Fellowship supervised by Dr. Andrew Busch, Ph.D. (www.bheresearch.org), and Dr. Sandra Japuntich, Ph.D. (www.hhrinstitute.org/our-research/addiction-medicine/reducing-the-impact-of-tobacco-related-disease).
HHRI is the third largest medical research non-profit in Minnesota and ranks in the top seven percent nationally of all institutions receiving research grants from the National Institutes of Health. At the HHRI, we have been actively investigating the causes of and potential treatments for diseases since 1952. We support and oversee the medical research conducted at Hennepin Healthcare. In an academic environment that emphasizes patient care, research, and teaching, HHRI helps offer patients better care now and hope for improved healthcare in the future.
Hennepin Healthcare’s flagship campus is Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC), a 484 bed public teaching hospital located in downtown Minneapolis, MN. HCMC employs approximately 7,000 people and is Minnesota’s largest safety net hospital. HCMC conducts approximately 600,000 clinic visits annually and is the state’s premier Level 1 Trauma Center. The majority of HCMC patients are of minority racial and/or ethnic backgrounds.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Our lab works to promote health equity in our urban safety net healthcare system and beyond. Work during this fellowship would generally focus on smoking cessation and other health behavior change among patients with mental illness, BIPOC individuals, and other underserved populations. This fellow would have the opportunity to contribute to multiple grants including ongoing clinical trials targeting smoking cessation in cardiac patients (R01HL136327), incarcerated individuals (NCT03799315), people with mental illness (R34DA046078-01), and dental patients (UG3DE029973). Many ongoing studies also test implementation and dissemination research questions. Additional opportunities include a project on racial disparities in lung cancer screening in smokers (ACS RSG CPHPS – 131649), testing a deposit contract app for smoking cessation (R44DA048668), and multiple projects applying Behavioral Activation for depression to cardiac patients (R03HL136540), people with HIV (R01NR015977), and homeless individuals with diabetes (K23DK118117).
Our group has a long history of collaboration with researchers at the University of Minnesota, where the fellow would find excellent collaborative opportunities, especially regarding tobacco research (www.tobaccoresearch.umn.edu). Drs. Busch and Japuntich are also faculty members of the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center (www.cancer.umn.edu). Institutional K awards (KL2 and K12 programs) are available through our relationship with the University of Minnesota.
This fellowship is designed for individuals seeking to establish an independent research career following fellowship. Primary responsibilities involve 1) project management on ongoing funded projects, 2) contributing to grant proposals, 3) publication of empirical studies, and 4) independent scholarship, including leading manuscript submissions and submitting grant proposals as PI. A travel allowance is provided and funds are available for fellow initiated pilot studies. This position will be for one year, renewable for a second year, subject to first year productivity. It is expected that the fellow would submit an NIH grant during their first year. This could be an independent award or a mentored award. Dr. Busch has served as a primary mentor on two K awards.
QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants with any doctoral level degree will be considered, but an ideal candidate would have a clinical degree that would allow them to see clinical research patients (e.g., clinical psychology, social work, nursing, MD, etc.). For clinical psychologists, a path to licensure in Minnesota will be provided through clinical hours on research studies and/or in clinical care. Both clinical and non-clinical fellows would have a pathway to a faculty appointment in the Department of Medicine if independent funding is obtained.
The ideal candidate would have a strong research background and have previous experience in one or more of the following areas: clinical trials research, smoking cessation, emerging tobacco products, health behavior change in cardiac patients, exercise science, health disparities research, treatment development, dissemination and implementation science, or Behavioral Activation.
