Senior Vice President, Clinical Services, Brigham Health

Reporting to the Brigham Health Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (EVP/COO), the Senior Vice President, Clinical Services (SVP) serves as the senior executive for two major areas of responsibility at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH):
Executive Partnership with Academic Departments: The SVP serves as the primary hospital executive partner to the BWH Department Chairs in their leadership of, and pursuit of excellence in, the quadripartite mission of clinical care, biomedical research, education, and community service within their respective departments. Specifically, the SVP partners with the following academic departments:
  • Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine
  • Department of Orthopaedic Surgery

The SVP collaborates directly and continuously with two Department Chairs. The SVP jointly supervises—with the Department Chairs—the two Executive Directors/Department Administrators who manage the day-to-day clinical, research, and education program operations within their respective academic departments. The SVP is responsible for the funding and indirect management of hospital FTEs who are deployed within those academic departments.
Executive Leadership of BWH Clinical Operations: The SVP serves as the executive directly responsible for all aspects of the clinical, administrative, and financial operations of the complementary BWH clinical enterprises.

Specifically, the SVP will serve as the executive overseeing all surgical, procedural and peri-operative/peri-procedural assets and services across Brigham Health, including 63 operating rooms, 5 cardiac catherization labs, 5 electrophysiology labs, 18 endoscopy suites, and 14 interventional radiology/nephrology suites, in addition to a wide range of clinical, business, and support services. The SVP will also be expected to assume executive operational responsibility for all future surgical, procedural, and peri-operative/peri-procedural assets, facilities and functions as Brigham Health evolves and grows into new locations and related functions.

To enable this work, the SVP will rely on management systems and operational delegation. For management systems, the SVP will lead or co-lead three critical groups: Perioperative Leadership Group, Cardiovascular/Interventional Radiology Leadership Group, and Endoscopy Leadership Group. To enable operational oversight and management of these areas, the SVP will have a reporting physician executive who serves as the operational leader for those surgical, procedural and peri-operative/peri-procedural assets and services. A critical factor in the success of this role will be a close partnership with peer Clinical Services SVPs, particularly the role whose departmental responsibility includes Surgery, Medicine, and Nuerosurgery, among others, given the overlapping nature of departmental activities and the associated clinical operations.

In addition, the SVP is responsible—directly, or in partnership with BWH senior leader colleagues, the Department Chairs, and/or other BWH clinical leaders—for a number of ongoing, broad organizational requirements, including:
  • Ensuring that competent, efficient, and coordinated patient care is uniformly provided to patients in ambulatory, inpatient and community settings;
  • Ensuring that all educational programs meet institutional and outside regulatory requirements;
  • Ensuring that all research initiatives are appropriately supported;
  • Directing and developing the organization of services and programs within the scope of responsibility of the SVP;
  • Managing all operating and capital budgets for the hospital within the purview of the SVP;
  • Leading the management team within the SVP’s enterprises toward attainment of identified short- and long-term goals and objectives;
  • Executing strategies and plans designed to achieve the institution’s strategic objectives; and
  • Collaborating with other institutional leaders to meet Brigham Health strategic goals and objectives.
