Civil Rights - Affirmative Action Intern

As a Civil Rights intern at the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT), you will assist in developing civil rights procedural manuals for Title VI, ADA and Disadvantaged Business Enterprises (DBE) programs. The Civil Rights intern will work cooperatively with the Civil Rights Staff, Civil Rights Committee, Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), DOT managers and supervisors to ensure that the procedural manuals include all required updates. This position will report directly to the Bureau Chief of Civil Rights and have dual assignments with the Office of Civil Rights and the Employment Services Bureau, Affirmative Action Officer.

Your Responsibilities:
The Civil Rights intern will research Title VI, ADA and DBE programs statutory regulations, organizational methods for maintaining and updating procedural manuals with current regulatory information and best practices to determine the feasibility and steps which supports the implementation of Title VI non-discrimination activities in Iowa DOT districts and division offices.
The Civil Rights intern will support a team of five by assisting in the preparation of standard data reports, conducting surveys to obtain program information, preparing draft markups and records maintenance, assisting in the establishment of benchmarks and internal controls. This new teammate will assist in the analysis of informational reports; analyze survey data for accuracy, completeness and consistency; and develop appropriate reporting formats. There is a need to translate materials from English to Spanish. A bi-lingual candidate is preferred, but not required.
Under the guidance of the Affirmative Action Officer, this new teammate will assist with compiling data and analyzing it to make impactful decisions to support affirmative action planning. This will include exposure to recruitment tactics, strategies and planning.

This internship is available to college students whose course of study relates to the position duties. Desired course of study: Law, Human Resources, Personnel Administration, Business, Psychology, Sociology, Public Administration, Liberal Arts or a closely related field.

What You’ll Need:
  • Knowledge and comprehensive understanding of theories, principles, and best practices of human resources, equal opportunity, affirmative action, and employment law; 
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and federal laws; 
  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the description of the job section; 
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity; 
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to develop official correspondence and reports; 
  • Leadership, effective interpersonal, customer service and relationship-building skills; 
  • Strong planning, time and project management skills and experience;
  • Thoroughness and attention to detail; 
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite, Gmail, and the ability to quickly learn new software;

Duration: May-August; 40 hours/week.
Hourly: $15.17/hr
